- "Zaloriis formally declares its independence!"
- ―Minister Transe Decar
Zaloriis was an Expansion Region planet colonized by Humans from Fondor. By 0 ABY it was home to Camp Culroon, a hidden Galactic Empire research base. That year, the planet attempted to join the Rebel Alliance, but Darth Vader led a strike force to recapture the planet.
History[]
The high winds of Zaloriis kept life to a minimum, but the sheltering boulders of the Fantain Mountains harbored smaller creatures and Zalorian rock-lions. Legends spoke of dune ghosts that wandered the wastes at night, and of travelers who never returned from their journeys. The natives respected the open deserts and lived well away from them, clustering in small outposts connected by well-traveled roads.[3]
The Imperials recognized the value of the Zalorians' fear and they established a research base out in the desert; Colonel Maximilian Veers was in charge of an AT-AT improvement program on the planet. Their test vehicles often bolstered the legends and tall-tales, as wanderers spotted the strange technologies being tested and reported back exaggerated accounts at the local tavern. One prototype walker was described as a "dune cow with giant tusks and a gray reptilian hide."[3]
Before the Battle of Hoth, it was governed by Minister Transe Decar when the planet decided to request independence. Vader denied the request and choked Minister Decar with the Force. After freeing Veers from a revolt by the Zalorian Separatists, Vader used the AT-AT prototype to assault Zaloriis City and the Rebel Alliance base there.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
Zaloriis first appeared in the 2001 video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds during the Darth Vader campaign. The campaign was later included in the game's 2002 expansion pack, Clone Campaigns. The game's strategy guide, released a week before the game, was the first source to mention Zaloriis.
Galactic Battlegrounds implied that Zaloriis was in the Outer Rim Territories, as Vader was searching for the Rebels there during the campaign. However, the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed Zaloriis in the Expansion Region, in grid square P-12.[2]
