"Why do you dance here instead of in a cantina?"
"Because more goes on than meets the eye in places such as this. The people one meets can be quite informative and enthralling if one knows where to look and when to listen. And there are always those interested in information from a planet such as this one."
―A spacer and Bertos Goodner[1]

Bertos Goodner was a male Twi'lek who lived on Naboo during the Galactic Civil War. Posing as a dancer, he was in fact a spy of the Rebel Alliance.

Biography[]

"My friend. Welcome to Moenia. The starport is a bustling center of commerce and community. Shall I dance for you?"
―Bertos Goodner, to a spacer[1]

After the Battle of Yavin, Bertos Goodner stood by the entrance of the Moenia spaceport on Naboo. Posing as a dancer, Bertos Goodner would offer to dance for traveling spacers who passed through the city. The Twi'lek preferred to dance at the spaceport rather than in the cantina so he could gather more information from the travelers. In fact, Bertos Goodner was a member of the Alliance Intelligence and the commander of the Rebel spies on Naboo.[2]

In 1 ABY,[3] a Rebel spy named Simo Oron was captured by Imperial forces and detained in a small Imperial Base in the Lasay Swamp. On Corellia, the Rebellion made arrangements to rescue Simo but his personal effects, including a sensitive contact list, were left behind. The Rebel droid C-3PO therefore tasked a group of Rebel operatives with obtaining his contact list in the Imperial base on Naboo. After the Rebel operatives succeeded in finding the contact list, they handed it over to Bertos Goodner in Moenia.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Bertos Goodner was a non-player character (NPC) in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4]

Bertos Goodner was added to the game with the expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed, released on October 27, 2004. This NPC was originally a "greeter NPC": an NPC present at the entrance of a starport to provide general information to players arriving on a new planet.[1] Bertos Goodner was later integrated into a quest of the revamped "Rebel Theme Park,"[2] released with the "Chapter 6" update, on May 22, 2007.[5]

  3. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
