Cotellier (ko-tell-yi-err) was a desert mining planet in the Rseik sector of the Outer Rim Territories.[2]

Description[]

Located at the end of the Sanrafsix Corridor,[3] Cotellier was a desert mining world renown for its Nova crystal production, and was a deep red color that was visible from space.[2] Cotellier was complemented by its moon - a massive emerald colored planet encircled by three rings of ice and rock - which seemed impossibly close when standing on Cotellier's surface, the moon taking up much of the horizons.[2] Possessing little surface water, the deep red sand and ruddy topsoil of Cotellier was frequently whipped up into immense dust storms, kilometers in size, that howled across the surface.[2] Cotellier possessed few natural features save the massive crags, pits, and shafts that had been gouged into the planet due to nova crystal and ore mining; so deep that light couldn't reach the bottom, these mining tracks and pits did little to stop sandstorms, which tended to race through these canyons until they were dispersed by a mining platform.[2]

Dotting the planet's surface are mobile mining towers that possessed scores of landing bays and bustled with activity; with it being common for numerous cloud cars and flitters to be buzzing about the platforms.[2] Over a kilometer tall, and a hundred meters in diameter (though a handful were as large as five hundred meters), these mobile platforms roamed the surface of Cotellier until a suitable mining site was found.[2] The platform would then stop, and massive plasma drill arrays at the platform's base would fire barrages of crimson beams into the ground, kicking up massive dust clouds, and creating a massive new mining pit.[2] When excavation was completed, droids and organic miners would venture out into the newly formed pit to collect and mine exposed veins of crystal and ore.[2]

The power requirements for these platforms was massive, and the platforms were known to shake and vibrate from the raw power put out by their generators, even when not in use.[2] Whether mining or not, the platforms were characterized by energy discharges that arced off the platform into the sky, creating lightning storms even on clear days; often other platforms could be made out on the horizon by their own lightning flashes.[2] When needed, these energies could coalesce into a vast spherical shield capable of protecting the platform from the vicious sandstorms that ravaged the planet.[2]

More than simple mining platforms, each tower was essentially a miniature city; each housed miners, families, and support crew for a total complement of ten thousand, plus droids.[2] Further, each tower possessed amenities needed for life on a station, including shops and markets, holographic parks, and common areas - higher up the platform were corporate levels, containing elaborate suites, offices, and workstations.[2] The miners themselves were considered grim-faced yet hardworking citizens, with life on the stations being hard yet lucrative.[2] No matter one's wealth or station on the platforms, the red dust of Cotellier seemed omni-present, and could be found everywhere - from floors, to ceilings, to a light dusting on the clothes of the people.[2]

As the platforms were corporate owned and controlled, everyone - including children - wore ID tags whether on duty or not.[2] This was done to regulate the presence of personnel on certain floors, with security being omnipresent.[2] Security was equally heavy for exterior mining operations; cargo barges carrying raw crystals often bristled with heavy weapon batteries, and were typically escorted by a dozen starfighters each.[2]

History[]

By the time of the Bordal Contagion of 214 BBY, the Rseik sector (and Cotellier) was part of the Galactic Republic; however Republic authority had ceased to exist beyond Kabal and the Rseik sector had fallen into anarchy, the region being well known as a haven for intense and persistent piracy that greatly disrupted trade, with local Planetary Security Forces being vastly outgunned and outnumbered.[4] The problem became so persistent that multiple regional companies, such as Kett Shipping and Cotellieri Transports Limited approached the Trade Federation for help in exchange for becoming subsidiaries.[4]

The Trade Federation began to heavily police the sector as a result, and the region saw a massive increase in business and security.[4] Following this period the Tamarin and Rseik sectors were effectively Trade Federation vassals despite being - technically - in the Republic, and most saw the Trade Federation as necessary despite their strict control of the ore and crystal trade and their role in the shipment of illegal spice throughout the region.[4]

During this time, Firmus Kett's family had carried ore and nova crystals from Cotellier to Kabal through the Sanrafsix Corridor for centuries.[4]
