The Clone Wars: The Way of the Warrior was a young reader book written by Jonathan Green. It was published on October 25, 2010, as a joined venture between the publishing teams of Penguin Books and Penwizard. As the first ever personalized Star Wars book, allowing the fans of the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars to appear in print alongside some of its heroes and villains. As is the specialty of Penwizard, Way of the Warrior could be personalized for its intended reader. To create an avatar, the customer made a choice between siding with the Jedi or the Sith. Upon ordering, the book could be customized by selecting facial features along with hair style and color, face shape, eye color, and skin tone to create a likeness. If the customer chose the Jedi version, his or her character replaced Anakin Skywalker. If he or she chose the Sith version, his or her own darksider replaced Asajj Ventress.

Plot summary[]

During the Clone Wars, the galaxy was torn apart by the clashes between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The peace-keeping Jedi Order fought on the Republic's side, while the Confederacy was headed by a member of the Sith, the Jedi's longtime enemies. At some point during the war, Yoda, the Grand Master of the Jedi Order, sensed a disturbance in the Force warning him that the Way of the Warrior, an ancient Palawa prophecy, was about to come to pass. According to that prophecy, a champion representing each faction of a great war would emerge to follow the Way of the Warrior, and one of them would earn a reward that could tilt the war in his or her favor.

Yoda decided to send the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to Bunduki so he could claim the reward in the name of the Order. However, news of the prophecy also reached the ears of the Sith. Count Dooku, Sith Lord and leader of the Confederacy, dispatched his acolyte Asajj Ventress as his own champion. Upon landing on Bunduki in a Y-wing starfighter, Skywalker started to look for Jeter Snahl, a Palawa hermit who guarded the secrets of the prophecy. Shortly thereafter, Dooku's acolyte in turn reached Bunduki and set off in search of Skywalker. The Jedi ended up locating Snahl, but did not have the occasion to ask him about the Way of the Warrior, as Ventress turned up and attacked him. The two champions started dueling keeping their attention away from Snahl. Unbeknownst to the two duelists, there was a third visitor in the hermit's lair. The bounty hunter Cad Bane, who had been hiding in the shadows, managed to sneak in and abduct Snahl, taking him about his starship, the Sleight of Hand. Bane hoped that he could force the hermit to reveal the location of the reward so the bounty hunter could sell it on the black market.

Main characters[]

Dooku[]

Dooku TCW portrait

Dooku, Count of Serenno, is a defrocked Jedi Master, a Sith Lord and the head of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, one of the two warring parties in the Clone Wars.[4] A political idealist, he felt that the Jedi Order had weakened itself by serving an institution as corrupt as the Galactic Republic. After leaving the Order, the disillusioned Dooku rallied thousands of rogue planets behind him, building the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Thirsting for more power, the count has also become the disciple of Darth Sidious, the reigning Dark Lord of the Sith.[5] In actuality, the Sith control both sides of the war, as Sidious is none other than Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the elected leader of the Republic.[6]

Anakin Skywalker[]

Anakin-TCWCotF

During the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker serves a Jedi General, playing a major role in defending the Galactic Republic against the Separatist threat. Born a slave, Skywalker was reared on the sun-scorched planet of Tatooine, where he was discovered by the Jedi Order ten years before the start of the Clone Wars. After joining the Order at the unorthodox age of nine, Skywalker grew up into a powerful yet unruly Jedi under the tutelage of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because of his midi-chlorian count that breaks all records, many think that he is the Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force.

Asajj Ventress[]

Ventress TDS

Born a Nightsister of Dathomir, Asajj Ventress is the personal assassin of Count Dooku and a commander of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. As an infant, Ventress was whisked away to Rattatak when her mother gave her up to the Siniteen criminal Hal'Sted to protect her clan. When her new guardian was shot by pirates, she was taken in by the Jedi Master Ky Narec, who started to train her in the ways of the Force. When he too was killed by a space pirate, Ventress swore revenge, taking her first step on the path to the dark side.[7] Eventually, she managed to attract the attention of Dooku. After testing her abilities, the Count made her his apprentice and a commander in the Alliance.[8] He also gave her twin lightsabers that can be joined to form a saberstaff. Although she yearns to be considered a true Sith, the Rule of Two forbids it.

Continuity[]

While The Way of the Warrior mostly drew its elements from the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it also drew elements from older Expanded Universe works.[1] Most notably, the book's premise involves the Followers of Palawa, who were first mentioned in the 1996 roleplaying guide Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook.[9]

Since Anakin Skywalker already knows Cad Bane,[1] the story must taker place after Season Two episode Holocron Heist, during which revealed himself to the Jedi by trying to steal from their Temple.[10] Additionally, the fact that Ventress still works for Dooku[1] places the events of the book before Nightsisters, the Season Three episode in which the Count attempted to kill her.[7]

Jeter Snahl's appearance was based on a promotional picture of Tal Merrik, a character that appeared in The Mandalore Plot, the twelfth episode in Season Two of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series. Merrik's model was given a new, bearded face and its clothes were changed from blue to green.
