Sanyassans were a humanoid species in the the galaxy; among its members was a pirate named Gruk who led other individuals of the species in criminal escapades during the New Republic Era. These pirates came into conflict with the crew of Sidon Ithano in a section of the galaxy known as the Lost Clusters, where Ithano's group managed to subdue Gruk's forces and commandeer his Munificent-class star frigate.

The species first appeared in Star Wars canon in "Tales of Villainy: The Crimson Corsair and the Crime Lords of the Barren Rim," a story written by Landry Q. Walker and published in 2021's Star Wars Adventures (2020) 7. Walker revealed on Twitter that the species was meant to be the Sanyassan pirates that first appeared in the 1985 made-for-TV film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Walker had originally intended for the pirates to be Ewoks themselves, but story complications led to the Sanyassans later filling that role.
