―Obi-Wan Kenobi watches G8-R3 and his companions being fired upon — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

G8-R3 was an astromech droid which served onboard the Naboo Royal Starship used by the royalty of the planet Naboo. During the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation, Queen Padmé Amidala used the vessel to try and escape from the planet, but came under fire from Lucrehulk-class freighters. When the Royal Starship's shield generator was damaged, the ship's astromechs attempted to repair it, but G8-R3 was destroyed in the attempt.

―Jar Jar Binks greets G8-R3 and the other astromechs — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

The astromech droid designated G8-R3 was one of six astromech units which served on board the Naboo Royal Starship used for transport by the royalty of the planet Naboo.[2] In the year 32 BBY,[1] Naboo was blockaded and then invaded by the Trade Federation over a tax dispute. The Federation managed to successfully capture Theed, the world's capital, and took over Theed Royal Palace During the Federation's occupation, G8-R3 remained onboard the Royal Starship in the Royal Hangar, along with five other astromech droids.[2]

After being rescued by two Jedi, the reigning queen at the time, Padmé Amidala, and her entourage fought their way to the Royal Starship and boarded it, hoping to escape Naboo and travel to the planet Coruscant where the Queen could plea for help from the Galactic Senate. Once the group was onboard, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, a companion of the Jedi, was told to remain with the astromechs and not cause trouble by Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. Binks greeted the droids, causing them to activate and turn to face him.[2]

As the ship attempted to escape Naboo, it was greeted by the Federation's blockade of battleships, which opened fire on the Royal Starship and damaged its shield generator. G8-R3 and its companions were alerted to the damage by an alarm, and the group quickly made its way to the ship's exterior to attempt repairs. Positioning themselves on the vessel's right wing, the droids began their work on the generator while under fire from the battleships. In turn, each droid was destroyed until only G8-R3 and R2-D2 remained, and then G8-R3 too was hit, its parts being blown away into the void of space. The sole survivor, R2 managed to repair the generator and reactivate the Royal Starship's shielding, allowing it to escape the blockade.[2]

Characteristics[]

G8-R3 had white and yellow colored plating, with red and yellow sensors. The droid possessed a small manipulator arm, which it used to try and repair the Royal Starship.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

G8-R3 was designed for use in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, first appearing in the film's 1999 novelization, a part of the Star Wars Legends continuity. The droid was not identified in the film or novel, but received a name in the Legends Star Wars: Episode I Insider's Guide released by LucasArts in the same year as the film's release.
