A navigation buoy

Navigation buoys, also known as marker buoys or beacon-buoys[2] were navigational aids deployed in star systems to mark hyperlanes into and out of a system[1] and to denote jumpzones. Starships reverting to realspace calculated their jump to arrive near a navigation buoy to ensure their passage was free of danger.[2]
Buoys were typically assigned an alphanumeric callsign, such as "B-145."[1] They could also be employed by scouts to mark a newly discovered territory as "claimed" while they headed back to civilized space to register their find.[3]
