"It is finally good to see you in person, and in one piece. My name is Doctor Nomi Rhane, good to meet you."
―Dr. Nomi Rhane, to a spacer[1]

Doctor Nomi Rhane was a female Twi'lek biologist who lived during the time of the Galactic Civil War.

Biography[]

"We've barricaded ourselves in the maintenance room. There is an escape ladder here but the hatch is magnetically sealed."
―Dr. Nomi Rhane, to a spacer[1]

Following the Battle of Yavin, Dr. Nomi Rhane was part of the Galactic Empire's science staff in the Imperial Research and Prison Facility on the planet Dathomir. There, scientists were secretly conducting dangerous scientific research for the Empire, intending to re-engineer the dreadful Blackwing virus into a bioweapon. Dr. Rhane was a microbiologist who operated on level 2 of the research laboratory.[2] In 1 ABY,[3] Nomi Rhane was present when an accident took place in the Imperial Research and Prison Facility and the virus escaped containment. The virus killed most of the people in the area, turning them into undead creatures. However, Dr. Rhane survived the outbreak and joined a small group of survivors including Dr. Stane Tritan, Dr. Pram Dramango, Marpo Glenfik and TK-217. The survivors barricaded themselves in a maintenance room with an access to an emergency escape ladder. They resisted the attacks of the undeads but they did not manage to open the magnetic hatch and were stuck in that room. A group of spacers finally entered the research facility. Following the indications communicated by Nomi Rhane, they successfully unlocked the hatch blocking the emergency exit.[1] Furthermore, Dr. Rhane tasked the spacers with shutting down the facility ventilation to stop the spread of the virus outside the research center.[4] The survivors and the spacer then used the escape ladder to leave the facility. Once arriving at the surface, in the courtyard of the Imperial Research and Prison Facility, they were indeed attacked by the undeads. The spacers escorted the survivors to Camp Epsilon located nearby, where a group of refugees and a functional Lambda-class shuttle were awaiting them. The survivors, including Nomi Rhane, the spacers and the refugees of Camp Epsilon eventually escaped the Quarantine Zone together in the shuttle.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

Nomi Rhane appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[2] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[6] Nomi Rhane was added to the game with the "Game Update 14," released on October 12, 2009.[7]

  3. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
