- "Forget that silly game, Chewie."
- ―Han Solo
Planetary Poker was a card game that smugglers were known to play on long space voyages. The game consisted of a deck of cards, a hand for each player, and gold chips to keep track of variables in the game. At least two people could play the game.[1]
Sometime after the Battle of Yavin,[2] the astromech droid R2-D2 and Chewbacca, the co-pilot of the light freighter Millennium Falcon, played Planetary Poker aboard the ship during a voyage to the planet Tatooine with supplies for their friend Luke Skywalker's super-vaporator project. During the game, R2-D2's computer monitor became inoperational, forcing him to cease playing. Chewbacca became upset, as he was winning at the time, but the vessel's captain, Han Solo, told him to forget the "silly" game and to oil R2-D2 to restore his ability to function.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Planetary Poker appeared in the children's book The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot, which was published in 1979.[1] The book was authored by Eleanor Ehrhardt[3] and illustrated by Mark Corcoran.[1] Obi-Wan Kenobi and R2-D2 play the game in "Light Side Dark Side," a non-canon comic strip in Star Wars Gamer Special Edition, which was released in 2000. The story was written by Aaron Williams.[4]
