"To fully understand your potential, I need to place you in a real combat situation. It's the only way you can truly test yourself."
―Rydel Delan, to a spacer[1]

Rydel Delan was a male Sanyassan fighter and martial artist who lived during the Galactic Civil War.

Biography[]

"Ah, the brawling master. I'd like to talk to Rydel."
"Good. I like Rydel...he's so calm. I hear that he used to work for Nym on Lok."
―A spacer and Inaldra's Lieutenant[2]

Rydel Delan was a master of melee weapon and unarmed combat. He used to work for the pirate warlord Nym on Lok for a period of time but he eventually moved to the Bright Jewel system. After the Battle of Yavin, he worked out of the close combat training room as the brawling master on Tansarii Point Station, a space station located above Ord Mantell in the Bright Jewel system.[2]

In 1 ABY,[3] the Sanyassan hired a spacer to deal with a number of problems on the station. Delan first tasked the spacer with thinning down the increasing number of wild creatures in Tansarii Point Station's atrium, flits and scyks, that were becoming very aggressive.[1] Later, the spacer helped the local cantina owner, Tiarsis, with a bully who was scaring away customers. While doing so, the spacer discovered that a group of renegades calling themselves the Genesis Red was planning to sabotage the station. The spacer therefore headed to the lower level of Tansarii Point Station where he fought the saboteurs and prevented them to achieve their insane project.[4] In fact, the pirates had broken through the outer hull of the station, creating a very dangerous situation for its inhabitants. In order to avoid more damage, Rydel asked the spacer to kill the leader of the Genesis Red gang, known himself as Genesis Red. The spacer eventually succeeded in doing so, earning the respect and reconnaissance of Rydel Delan for saving numerous beings in Tansarii Point Station.[5]

Equipment[]

Delan used to wear a Marauder armor.[1] He also owned several old pieces of fighter equipment including a tarnished brawling champion's ring, a frayed pit fighter's belt and a warp Brawler's bracelet one of which he gave to the spacer in thanks for his help.[4] He also carried a sword, an axe and a knuckler as his own weapons however for killing Genesis Red he gave one to the spacer to show his gratitude.[5] One of Rydel's swords was left behind at a Downed Blood Razor's Transport on Lok, only to later be retrieved by a spacer exploring the area.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Rydel Delan was a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[7] Rydel Delan was added to the game as part of the "New Player Tutorial," introduced with the release of the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[8] He gave the player several optional side quests of varying levels of difficulty.[1][4][5]

  3. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
