I'm assuming that User:Dark Spork has released this image under the GFDL. Confirmation? --SparqMan 20:06, 8 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Smaller versions[]

Because the logo is dark and the text has a thick black stroke, it does not scale well. Boiler plates and stub templates that use smaller versions of the logo look like they have a little dark smudge rather than our logo. We might need a variant logo for use in <150px instances. --SparqMan 05:20, 10 Jan 2006 (UTC)

  • How about one that just uses a big W? -- Dark Spork 08:56, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)

My thoughts exactly. --SparqMan 09:04, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Trademark[]

A concern has been raised that "wookiee"pedia is a trademark of Lucas, and using it in such a prominent way such as the logo, could result in problems for this community, who are liable for the content here. I would recommend you replace this with something that isn't trademarked, or remove the text from the logo. Is the image behind this text free to use or was that taken from somewhere else? Angela (talk) 16:13, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)

  • Since we're not profiting from it, what's the problem with using it? Adamwankenobi 16:38, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
    • We're not profiting, but Wikia is (Google ads, you know). --Imp 16:46, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
      • I see. But I still don't see the problem since Wikia is a non-profit organization which uses google as more of a sponsor. Besides, would Lucas really want do this to his biggest fans? Not a good way to sell box sets, if you ask me. :P Adamwankenobi 16:52, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
        • Actually, Wikia is a for-profit organisation. Anyway, I'm sure we can slap on "Star Wars, the Star Wars logo, Wookiee, and all names and pictures of Star Wars characters, vehicles and any other Star Wars related items are registered trademarks and/or copyrights of Lucasfilm Ltd." somewhere. --Imp 17:02, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
          • Yeah, that might work. :D But I'm surprised someone hasn't already put that on the site. Adamwankenobi 17:11, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
  • The image is taken from a screenshot of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Oh, and wouldn't using the words "Star Wars" in our logo be just as big a trademark violation as using "Wookiee"? --Imp 17:32, 12 Jan 2006 (UTC)
  • Angela, who has raised the concern? I can appreciate Wikia wanting to cover its rear, but the logo seems to be an odd place to start. In 1999, Lucasfilm attorneys served hundreds of cease and desist letters to websites with Star Wars related URLs. Doesn't starwars.wikicities.com raise some eyebrows too? By the way, the two live trademarks on the term can be found here: [1] and [2] --SparqMan 08:50, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)
  • Technically, I don't believe any images from Star Wars are free to use. We can probably get away with images in articles as fair use, but we may have to have an abstract logo of some sort. :-( jSarek 09:04, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)
    • Ehh. I figure if LFL goes after this kinda thing, we're screwed either way. Even if we used an 'original' DSII vector or something, it's still LFL's intellectual property.. -- Dark Spork 09:08, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)
      • Exactly; by abstract, I meant something that is in no way visually their intellectual property. Maybe a furry "W" or something; you know, something ugly and related to Star Wars by only the most tenuous of connections. :-/ jSarek 09:14, 13 Jan 2006 (UTC)
  • I was asking if an actual complaint was received. If so, I imagine most of the images used here (and Memory Alpha) would be toast. --SparqMan 05:51, 17 Jan 2006 (UTC)
    • Our old logo used a trademarked term anyway (ie "Star Wars"), so it would be affected as well. QuentinGeorge 06:01, 17 Jan 2006 (UTC)

The concern came from someone working for Wikia. I don't think the fact the wiki itself is non-profit changes the fact you can't use someone else's trademark. I've sent a link to this discussion to Wikia's legal counsel, Brad Patrick to see if he has any comments on the matter. Angela (talk) 15:14, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

    • I know this is rather old... The "Wookiee" trademark itself only appears to apply to toys and books at the moment. However, Star Wars is still trademarked. —Xwing328(Talk) 00:15, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
      • The logo is derived from a film screenshot (Episode VI), and can only be displayed under the "fair-use" license, because it is a "derivative work" (you cropped the Death Star and wrote "Wookieepedia" over it). — Canderous Ordo 18:12, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
        • Okay. Now does anyone know the bug for that? -- Dark Spork 06:51, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
