A flotilla was a naval term that was used to denote a group of small or medium-sized capital ships, mostly frigates or destroyers with corvette and starfighter support. Flotillas were usually commanded by an Admiral who administered the fighting from a specifically-designated flagship. The term was often used interchangeably with Fleet, and indeed some flotillas were so large that they were fleets unto themselves.
History
During the Clone Wars, flotillas of Venator-class Star Destroyers were used to attack Lucrehulk-class battleships. One of the most famous engagements using this tactic was the Battle of Coruscant in 19 BBY.
When setting out to attack the Rebel Alliance's hitherto secret base on Hoth during the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, Darth Vader brought with him a massive flotilla that consisted mostly of Imperial-class Star Destroyers from Death Squadron along with his flagship, the Executor-class Star Dreadnought Executor.
One year later, the Rebel Alliance amassed a large flotilla of warships, with the various classes of Mon Calamari Star Cruisers forming the bulk of the fleet, for use in the Battle of Endor This formation was also bolstered by many ships donated to the cause by many of the Alliance's other constituent space navies.
