Flux capacitor connectors were parts of hyperdrives. If they broke during hyperspace travel, they could short out the hyperdrive and cause the starship to abruptly drop out of hyperspace.
Behind the scenes
Edit
The Flux capacitor is a fictional device from the of the Back to the Future movie trilogy. Invented by Dr. Emmett Brown, it allowed Doc Brown and Marty McFly to travel through time in their De Lorean DMC-12.
A type of electrical component known as a capacitor does exist in the real world; however, these devices do not have the properties of the above-mentioned fictional mechanism of the same name. They simply are devices which can be charged up in order to store electrical energy, much in the same way that a battery works.
