I think most of us agree on the following: 1) Wookieepedia is not a gallery 2) Images in articles should help explain, not overcrowd With that said, there is an increasing number of images which exist solely in these "gallery" pages and on user pages. Galleries of images in use in articles is one thing, but uploading images simply for display purposes threatens our ability to use copyright images with our current ease, and they're a waste of space. For example, the following Anakin Skywalker images fall into the described category:

• File:News ep3 anakin.jpg

• I think I agree, for the most part. We're already pushing 'fair-use' to the limit, and we definitely don't need stuff like this. RMF 06:33, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Though I agree some galleries have a little too much that is not seen elsewhere, aside from the visual aide it may be to a visitor they also have another possible purpose. Every now and then we get a source which expands the story of a certain character/ship/droid/etc... and having a few "spare" images lying around could be useful. • Yes, there's definitely an overflow of images in galleries that are more for visual purposes. Perhaps there should be a more defining and clearer policy concerning images that're being uploaded and implemented in galleries and articles — as well as the general information that qualifies an image used for the character infobox. —Mirlen 14:36, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

• Well, don't they serve illustrative purposes in some way. I mean, in any case they could be arued to illustrate the character, location etc. as they are presented in various SW-material. I know, it's stretching it a bit but.... KEJ 06:40, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
• Agreed. If the galleries are only collating pics already on pages, that's fine. However, it seems people are uploading pics specifically for the galleries - that, in my mind, cannot be justified as fair use, and is a big no no. QuentinGeorge 06:59, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

  • agreed, however some pictures are useless, even to look at. Theres also a large amount of pictures that seem to be exclusivly for home pages, which surely must take a toll on memory, plus it looks very in professional. Jedi Dude 20:28, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Keep themEdit

1. --Eyrezer 04:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC) I'm thinking mostly of the species galleries. Normally most of the pics are used in articles anyway, but I think they are very informative. and worth keeping. A gallery quickly illustrates the physical characteristics and diversity of a race or species, which I think is a great boon to the Wookieepedia.

  • I started a vote simply to keep the debate active. For some reason, when users get the opportunity to vote, they suddenly get involved in a discussion.     • I'd like to clarify something. Galleries such as this, this, and this would remain open since 99.9% of the images there are used in one or more articles, is that correct? - JMAS 01:09, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

        • I don't see the point of having a gallery if all the images are in the article.           • I have to disagree. If all the images contained therein are used in actual articles, then the galleries are good way to display images from an entire category. Take Jedi for example. If someone is looking for images of different Jedi, they could navigate from one article to the next to the next trying to find them. Or, they could go to the Gallery of Jedi to see them all in one convenient location. - JMAS 18:23, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

                • So what about a gallery like this one? The article is not big enough to fit them all in, yet all pictures are quite different. Of the 8, 4 are used elsewhere. I think a gallery like this is a good way to avoid stuffing many good pics into an article that may not be long enough to take them. --Eyrezer 22:16, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

"Unknown" galleriesEdit

One thing to clarify . . . how would this affect galleries such as Gallery of unnamed Rebels and Gallery of unidentified species, which exist in place of articles about their topics? It seems to me the information provided by these galleries cannot be provided without these images, and are thus much more defensible as Fair Use. I'd say they probably should be kept on that basis. jSarek 07:18, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

• Good point. I think if the only way to know about something in a gallery is to have a picture (because there is a lack of information) then the picture/gallery should stay. If the picture is just there to "look cool" then take it away, unless someone can find a way to put it into an article that looks reasonably decent or are tryint to find a good image for a new/existing article and need other's help.
