As most of us know, the minimum image size to fit the width of the infobox in desktop view is 250px. Most of our infoboxes automatically scale images to this size for desktop, with the exception of conflict infoboxes, which alternatively scale to either 300px, 350px, or 400px. This is all codified in the Layout Guide.
As most of us also know, our site traffic is increasingly coming from mobile users. While desktop will always be of critical importance to us, a full 55% of Wookieepedia's traffic currently sees our wiki from mobile devices, either through an Internet browser or the Wikia app. Therefore, it's important that we make sure we're giving this majority segment of our readers the best possible presentation of Wookieepedia possible.
When viewing articles in mobile Internet browsers, 400px becomes the safe minimum image size to fit the width of most mobile devices when held vertically. I've included a gallery below to show what different image-width sizes look like on an iPhone 6 in vertical view. Obviously, images look a lot nicer when they're at least 400px wide in vertical view.
I am therefore proposing a new addition to the Layout Guide that requires all main infobox images be at least 400px in width whenever possible for optimum presentation for mobile users in vertical view. (Of course, everything changes if the phone is in horizontal view, in which case the minimum image size is much larger than 400px, but this at least covers the primary viewing mode.) The LG's infobox section's clauses regarding images will be organized into a subsection titled "Main image," which will now read as follows (new changes in bold):
Images used in infoboxes will be scaled to 250px (the minimum size to fit the infobox width in desktop view) for all infoboxes except conflict infoboxes (battles, wars, etc.), which use either 300px, 350px, or 400px, depending on specific template size. Larger default sizes are identified on the respective template pages. Images smaller than the default infobox size should not be scaled up.
Main infobox images shall be at least 400px in width whenever possible. This is done to accommodate the infobox's minimum width on most mobile devices in vertical view. Note that conflict infobox images do not currently show in mobile skin.
