The result of the debate was Wookieepedia:User image policy adopted for now: discuss changes on its talk page. —Silly Dan (talk) 22:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
At last weekend's Mofference, there was a bit of discussion about restrictions on the images people like to put on userpages. Namely, how many pictures should we allow, and what size is OK? Bearing in mind that userpages are not the primary reason for this wiki, I think the following restrictions should be OK:
- No more than 3 images should be uploaded which are intended solely for a userpage (or customized signature, if we're still allowing that.)
- None of these images should be above 100 kB
- Images being used on actual articles as well as a user's page are OK, within reason
- If more than five such images appear on a user page, the "image gallery" format should be used
- Images being used on officially approved, shared userboxes (like the little Ewok picture on Template:User ewok) shouldn't count towards these limits (because they're small and relatively unobtrusive), but images on custom userboxes would.
- Images must be "safe for work" (this should go without saying, and no one on this wiki has violated this rule on their user page as far as I know, but I just wanted to cover all contingencies here.)
We had a discussion back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, but it never really came to a conclusion. So, I'd like to start it up again. Comments? A vote, maybe? (Feel free to add more options.) —Silly Dan (talk) 02:08, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Darth Culator's proposal
- Darth Culator suggests a proposal similar to the one above, but with five user images allowed, with a total size of one megabyte.
- I vote for this. I like the total size limit better. -Finlayson 04:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Ban all user images
- This would still allow reuse of article images, and the images in userboxes.

Allow all user images
Comments
- Actually, the transcript of the meeting has people suggesting five, not three images. However, it seems to me that most users who have up to three images stop there, while users with more than three soon expand that to six or more. Also, images which come as part of an award by the rest of the community should be treated the same as images in userboxes, once we get some sort of awards system going. —Silly Dan (talk) 03:38, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- I agree there must be a limit, but since Angela said "don't worry about the storage space," I'd increase the proposed limits slightly. 5 images with a total size limit of 1 megabyte--thus averaging 200k each--seems more reasonable to me. (Of course, I have 2 different places to host my images from offsite, so I can agree to the current proposal if necessary just to curb the abuse). - Darth Culator 19:53, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- I somehow want to apply these same restrictions to images hosted offsite, in fact. —Silly Dan (talk) 23:31, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I think we already disallow offsite linking as Wookieepedia policy. jSarek 10:47, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- Really? That kinda sucks. If someone has their own personal webspace, I don't see why we should ban them from using it to host pics for their userpage. Darth Culator 11:45, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- Err... before voting, does my page break the proposed rule? Darth Kevinmhk 04:27, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Assuming all of those images are also used in articles, no. You even used the gallery format, which lots of people with a lot of images haven't bothered to figure out. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:40, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yup, they are used. You have my vote! Darth Kevinmhk 03:50, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

- I'm pretty sure that my page does not violate the aforementioned guidelines as there are no pics there aside from userboxes . . . yet. Atarumaster88 18:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- As for userboxes, I would think most of those should be for informative purposes, but a person can have up to five that are not. Does that sound fair enough? -- Riffsyphon1024 19:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- I'm tempted to say put up as many userboxen as you like if you follow the image use policy. —Silly Dan (talk) 22:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, regulating userboxes in that manner would be subjective and difficult to maintain. As a side note, I move that we put this page into policy – it's been a month and a half, and there seems to be a pretty solid majority for Silly Dan's proposal. RMF 22:34, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

- Consensus seems to have been reached, in the main: please see Wookieepedia:User image policy. —Silly Dan (talk) 17:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
