A while back I created the user box {{Wikipedia:User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/User Works at Another Wiki}}. (The template does not itself use the image, but it does on my user page when I call it.) Now I hear that I can't use the Wookiepedia logo in that box because the logo does not qualify for GFDL (fair use maybe, but that doesn't help me). Does someone have a suggestion for a replacement? (The explanation is at Wikipedia:User talk:Sherool#Commons "copyvio")

The explanation: Yes the image is tagged as GFDL licensed on Wookipedia (so are a lot of other plainly non-free images, theyr admins seem to be having a hard time keeping it "clean"), but it also says it's based on a screenshot from Return of the Jedi. Unless the person who created the logo also own the copyright to Return of the Jedi then he does not have exclusive rights to the work and can not release it under the GFDL. They can probably make a fair use case for the logo, but Commons does not accept fair use.

Typo. Try "Wookiepedia". -Will Pittenger 02:40, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

You a comedian? It's this wiki. Look at the logo. -Will Pittenger 02:46, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

  • It's based on a high-res picture of the model used in RotJ, not a screenshot. --Imperialles 02:48, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Alas, Will, we officially only allow images based on official Lucasfilm materials here (none of which can be GFDL, despite what our erroneous tags may say). I'm not sure we *have* a viable replacement. Even our names ("Wookieepedia" and "The Star Wars Wiki") include trademarked content, so we couldn't even whip up something simplistic based on those. In other news, this points up the need for a replacement tag for derivative images used on this site, since none of our images (except maybe a few user images) qualify for the GFDL. jSarek 02:57, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I tried to point out the problem months ago and no one wanted to give up their fair use images. Even those at Wikia did not care. -Will Pittenger 03:29, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
  • It's not a problem with the use of the images. It's a problem of what license they're tagged with. Havac 03:34, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
  • 1) It's Wookieepedia - 2 e's. 2) It's a she that made the logo, not he - User:Dark Spork. 3) Wookieepedia is not trademarked. Yes, it is made of Wookiee, but the word "Wookiee" is not trademarked in regards to electronic/internet use. It is only trademarked in regards to merchandise such as clothing, books, toys, etc. 4) In multiple communications with LFL, no concerns over our logo have been brought up when discussing using it for various purposes. 5) Just the fact that we are so concerned about this and have discussed it at length on multiple pages and in several meetings is supposed to protect us under the Fair Use section of copyright law. So yes, the tag just probably needs to be changed to a combination of {{Fairuse}} and {{GFDL-self}}. —Xwing328(Talk) 04:56, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry, to answer your original question about alternatives: No, I don't have any ideas right now, but maybe you could just use "Wookieepedia" without any images. —Xwing328(Talk) 04:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

My template needs an image page name. It will try to append "File:" on the front. I have "Wookiepedia" in the text. Besides, I think "Wookieepedia" has the wrong aspect ratio. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:07, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
