Havac and Ataru are flat-out against it, so I'd like to discuss the issue first.
Do we need an IRC bot?
If we do, what functions should it have and what functions should it not have? And how to prevent bot abuse?
Save this stuff for AIM. If there's to be a bot, it better be versed in Star Wars knowledge, able to access Wookieepedia for answers. Otherwise, no. -- Riffsyphon1024 03:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Accessing Wookieepedia? I can do that. What syntax would you suggest? (As for weather, it's among standard plugins, I only need to enable it.) - Sikon 07:07, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
***We don't need it, no, but I don't think it's something we need to *not* have, either. As long as it's not obtrusive, what the hell. I don't know enough about bots to really comment on the specific feature list, though. jSarek 09:08, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Sure . . . it's not obtrusive. Especially not when half a dozen people show up just to type "!roulette" and see if they're kicked or not. Definitely not obtrusive when half a dozen others play around with it and/or talk about the bot. And most certainly not when people load insults into the "!Username" and then play it back to annoy others. Nope, not obtrusive at all. Atarumaster88(Talk page) 14:36, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
The weather function is pointless. The trivia function will just turn IRC into a circus. Let it access Wookieepedia and repeat stuff we often have to say in IRC (like "No Politics!") and leave it at that. Gonk(Gonk!) 15:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
A recent changes bot would be handy, providing it was in a seperate IRC channel. -- I need a name (Complain here) 17:52, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Having seen a bad bot day in action, I'm now all in favor of euthanizing it. Or at least giving it no user-serviceable parts inside. jSarek 04:12, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Seconding jSarek. That's not something I want in the IRC. - Lord Hydronium 05:41, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Especially one that kicks people for less than stellar language. I cry Freedom of Speech. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:26, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Indeed. If this is what bots will do, then I say no as well. -- Ozzel 06:33, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
All right, kicking for profanity was a bad idea. Consider it scrapped. - Sikon 08:02, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I have yet to see the bot do anything that either I can't do myself or that isn't pointless and abused by everyone to clutter up the channel and annoy people. We've gotten along fine without an automated immaturity machine. I think we can keep going without it. Havac 23:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
