Darth Vader obviously had a control panel on his chest to monitor his respirator and such. So, when Luke Skywalker and other Jedi battled the Sith Lord, why couldn't they just crush Vader's contol panel, thus making him unable to breath?
Several sources have indicated that Vader's fighting technique was adapted to protect his midsection at all costs. One Jedi (I think it was in Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader) noticed that he was protecting the control panel, and that was mere weeks after his transformation. Safe to assume he got better at it. Also, Luke wasn't particularly amazing yet with the Force as of his duel on either Cloud City or the Death Star. Crushing a small control panel with the Force while fighting isn't easy, especially for such a newbie. Last, who's to say that would've worked? Vader spent 23 years puttering with his life support equipment. It's likely that, between his own enhancements and logical backup systems, crushing the control panel wouldn't kill him (at least not right away; he'd have the time to win or at least to escape to fight another day).
