Given that senators and representatives elect someone from within the Senate itself to serve as Supreme Chancellor, how is it that Jedi held the position from 1,400 BBY to 1,000 BBY? I wouldn't think that the Jedi held a position in the Senate since it was divided into representative sectors and systems.
- It was a different time. The Republic was at war with the Sith from 2,000 BBY to 1,000 BBY. Jedi chancellors were appointed as part of greater Jedi involvement to protect the Republic. It's not the most democratic system (I imagine that the Republic might've operated more like a Constitutional Monarchy back then), but it was to protect the Republic. It almost did not succeed, saying as the Republic basically fell during that millennium-long war.
