I'm researching fictional currencies for a project and I was wondering what people think the USD/GPB conversion rate would be for 1 Galactic Credit Standard, and why?
Any info where the cost of something in GSC is referred to directly would be really helpful. I know Luke got 2,000 GSC for his land speeder, and a hyperspace-capable starship costs over 10,000 GSC, but it's hard to find "our-world" equivalents for these!
Thanks in advance!
Quite a few items are given prices in many of the RPG sourcebooks some of which will have real world equivalents you can compare to. One of the best sources however might be the category for food from Dex's Diner. All of it comes from a menu that was published on Star Wars Hyperspace and so there are given prices for the food. Much of the food is based entirely on real world food like Xizor salad which is suppose to be similar to caesar salad and Besh-Leth-Trill sandwich which are meant to be BLT sandwiches. Hope this helps. Ayrehead02 (talk) 10:58, May 2, 2013 (UTC)
Another thing to keep in mind is that Star Wars fiction spans millennia. In the game Star Wars: The Old Republic, for instance, you can buy a landspeeder for one million credits! Certainly, the value of the currency has fluctuated quite a lot that you won't really be able to do any meaningful comparisons unless you restrict yourself to a specific time frame or era. ~Savage 13:16, May 2, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks both for your replies (sorry if I'm formatting this answer wrong, first time posting on a wiki forum!) I'm going to try to stay as close to the film canon as I can with this, but the RPG and Dex's Diner could still be useful sources, thanks for those!
Good point SavageBob, I guess I'm mainly focusing on the time surrounding the Battle of Yavin. How I ultimately work the conversion rate out doesn't have to be *too* accurate - I mean, I could say Luke's speeder is equivalent to a fairly beat-up car, which you'd probably get about $1000 for, so 1 GSC = roughly $0.50. But if there's some more specific information out there I'm overlooking, I'd love to hear it! —Unsigned comment by126.96.36.199 (talk • contribs).
The problem with using only the original trilogy as a source is that there simply aren't many items for which we hear a credit value. Aside from Luke's landspeeder, the price to hire the Falcon, and the bounty on Chewbacca in Jedi, I can't think of any other credit values. But the game Star Wars Galaxies took place during the Rebellion, and it featured lots of items for sale. You could use that as a basis, since a lot of that information is still probably online or easily accessible via the various Prima game guides. Good luck! Another useful EU source is The Star Wars Sourcebook, which has a two-page pricelist for items both exotic and mundane. I quote some of the more illuminating prices here. jSarek (talk) 09:28, May 3, 2013 (UTC)
