Why is it forbidden for a Jedi to have romantic love/romance/romantic times? Doctor 25 (talk) January 13, 2017
Thanks for the question, the concept of a celibate Jedi Order was introduced in The Phantom Menace. George Lucas basically conceptualized the Jedi as a monastic order dedicated to protecting peace and justice in the galaxy. Love and romance is seen as something that blinds them to their duty and commitments. Catholic clergy and Buddhist monks and nuns have similar ideas about duty and service. This conversation between Yoda and Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith sums up the Jedi attitude towards love and romance:
Yoda: "Careful you must be when sensing the future, Anakin! The fear of loss is a path to the Dark Side."
Anakin: "I won't let my visions come true, Master Yoda."
Yoda: "Rejoice for those around us who transform into the Force. Mourn them, do not. Miss them, do not. Attachment leads to jealousy, the shadow of greed, that is."
Anakin: "What must I do, Master Yoda?"
Yoda: "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."
Basically, the Jedi have this idea that love leads to attachment, which then leads to jealousy and the fear of losing. The fundamental difference between the Jedi and Sith is that the Jedi put the greater good ahead of self while the Sith are all about self-glorification. The Jedi Code n Dark Disciple also emphasizes mastering one's emotions and passions, which would include love.
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.
So, in short, the Jedi are about duty, service, and putting the greater good over self. That would also appear to cover love and romantic attachments as well. Andykatib 08:19, January 14, 2017 (UTC)
