Was it possible for a son of a privileged or simply wealthy family to purchase commissions in the Imperial Navy? If promotion was based entirely on merit, the Galactic Empire may not have been as backwards and wicked as people think. Darth Crate 02:19, February 12, 2011 (UTC)
- The actual purchase of commissions did not seem to happen much or at all, but nepotism and political leverage from powerful families did play a role in officer promotion (e.g. Nahdonnis Praji, Ulric Tagge, or Maximillian Seerdon), as did traits not associated with forward-thinkingness or virtuousness, such as an outright willingness to engage in brutality (e.g. Wilhuff Tarkin) and the political backstabbing of fellow personnel (e.g. Ysanne Isard). It was a rare officer who achieved a high rank through competence without political connection (Xamuel Lennox and Martio Batch being a notable examples). jSarek 03:47, February 12, 2011 (UTC)
