Greetings. Ok, I'm a bit of a military geek, which is why I have to ask the following question: Was there a differance in insignia worn by the officers of the Galactic Empire's army and navy, or was it a separate insignia device, (that was never shown in any of the examples I've seen), or how did it work? What am I not seeing?
The question is more complicated than it looks, because the costume designerJohn Mollo revealed that, at the time of the movies, they did not really establish a clear system for the rank plaques. Some later sourcebooks did give a few answers, but nothing really systematized. Because of that, many rank plaques that appeared within the Expanded Universe depended on the artist. With the release of The Essential Guide to Warfare, we now have a clear, defined rank plaques guide for the Imperial Navy (see picture here). That pretty table doesn't include the Imperial Army ranks, but the guide does mention that the Navy specialist ranks are similar to that of the Army. For example, the specialist rank of "general" in the Navy is identical to the one worn by Maximilian Veers, who was an army general. The "rank insignia plaque" article certainly should be revised, but this promises to be no easy task. Is my answer helpful? --LelalMekha (talk) 16:35, September 27, 2013 (UTC)
I understand the system of the rank plaques, as a matter of fact, I spend a lot of my time trying to establish a pattern in the plaques, but believe me, its damn hard. But my question was weather or not it was the rank plagues themselves, or a separate insignia device, (i.e. collar badge, arm patch, hat badge or cuff insignia), that distingushed army officers from navy officers. Its clear that uniforms showed no differance, (i.e. General Tagge and Admiral Motti in the Death Star conferance room). I really just wanna know that, but thanks anyway. --MadMarek (talk) 12:52, September 28, 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Until proved otherwise, there is no difference other than the rank plaques, at least none that has been described in canonical sources that I know of. I suppose the plaque/cylinders combinations themselves are enough to make the distinction most of the time. Because of that, you certainly may confuse army officers with navy specialists, though... --LelalMekha (talk) 13:00, September 28, 2013 (UTC)
