So I have a question (obviously).
The Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) during the Clone Wars used these devices called STAP's. They were also used in the Battle of Naboo in the Naboo Crisis.
Why did the STAP's have to have a droid operate them? Why couldn't the STAP's be operational alone as it's own droid? Cause like Vulture droids were droids by themselves and didn't need a pilot, but the STAP's do?! How does that work? Wouldn't it also cause less casaulties if the STAP was destroyed? Only the vehicle would be destroyed, not the droid as well?
We don't know. Why are there pilots in X-wings or TIEs? At this point, it's all speculation. And that's not what this is for. <-Omicron(Leave a message at the BEEP!) 03:12, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
Well, for the X-Wings...after the Clone Wars, the Empire and the Rebels strayed away from droids for fear of another Clone Wars. But yeah, I guess it's just speculation.
The answer is: The droids traverse slowly on foot and needed a way to move faster. Making STAP, which is "Single Trooper Arial Platform," a droid don't let the droids move any faster. Anakin Skyobiliviator (talk) 12:21, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
Why didn't the CIS and Trade Federation just make all of the droids like STAP's so that they could move around quickly?
There's no concrete, absolutely canonical answer, which leaves only speculation. That's generally frowned upon in this forum. I will posit that since STAPs are verified as enjoying wide usage by living creatures for millenia (eg TOR), it's likely that they are actually not specifically made for droids at all. Therefore, battle droids using STAPs is an ad hoc arrangement. DD97Which bear is best? 14:23, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
Well, Dangerdan97, I remember this source, that the STAP was used only by droids due to the turbine giving hot air at the users legs. Droids, who have no feelings, do not feel the heat. To the question of why the Trade Federation use battle droids instead of STAP droids is probably due to there is already a Droid Starfighter. And due to STAP's lack of arms or legs, it is terrible for taking hostage. But I agree, this forum is full of speculations. Anakin Skyobiliviator (talk) 00:45, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
Well, here's something that's not speculation: Anakin used a STAP briefly during the Battle of Teth. Therefore, they can be used by living beings also. Master JonathanHolocommThursday, January 5, 2012, 22:33 UTC
Briefly. A leg exposed for a long time can only be tolerated by non-organic.Anakin Skyobiliviator (talk) 22:36, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
Or, mayhap, people wearing armor? Case in point (admittedly this is game mechanics): in Battlefront II, Clone troopers can fly STAPs. Taral, Dark Lord of the Sith 13:52, January 6, 2012 (UTC)
But the output will heat up the armor and make it unbearable for the wearer. Anakin Skyobiliviator (talk) 22:49, January 6, 2012 (UTC)
So how do you explain a Bespin-class airhook? The STAP is based on these. Also there was a retcon on the radiation from the power cells giving off harmful heat emissions to a living pilot's legs. Sorry. Ghost Who Walks 14:44, January 12, 2012 (UTC)
