When I was a kid, between the time of seeing the original trilogy (mid 80's) and seeing the prequels, I remember hearing or seeing in a comic the story of the "Duel on Mustafar"
I remember vaguely even a comic drawing of Vader in lava, and knew that Obi-Wan "fought"/killed Anakin/Vader...
Was this in a comic book, book book? It was well known I thought that the end of the prequels would END with the fight between these two... Correct? —Unsigned comment byStarWarsQuestion (talk • contribs).
Good question! We didn't know the name of Mustafar until Episode III, so there weren't any comic stories about that. There were, however, two big things that we did know:
In 1978, before anyone knew Vader and Anakin were the same person, George Lucas said that Obi-Wan nearly killed Vader. Vader fell into a volcanic pit, which was where his disfigurement and injuries came from.
In the novelization of Return of the Jedi, in Vader's death scene, he thinks back to his youth and remembers the feeling of lava crawling up his back.
So we've known since 1978 that there'd be a volcanic duel and that Obi-Wan won. We just didn't know any details about it until Episode III. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 23:48, July 18, 2016 (UTC)
WOW, thanks Brandon for the response! I'm not crazy! hehe.
Any chance there was a sketch or some artwork of their duel and the outcome that would have come out between the releases?
I'm not sure about the Obi-Wan/Vader duel, but the earliest McQuarrie sketch for the Emperor's throne room in Episode VI depicted it as a subterranean lake of lava where Luke and Vader would've had their final confrontation. (The fight was changed to the Death Star II, but the art later became the basis for the Well of the Dark Side in the Clone Wars TV series.) - Cwedin(talk) 00:18, July 19, 2016 (UTC)
