So if a ship traveling in Hyperspace could destroy or badly damage a planet by crashing into it, why did the Empire build the Deathstar? It seems like it would be cheaper and easier to build a fleet of star destroyer type ships and simply crash them into any planets you wanted to destroy. —Unsigned comment by126.96.36.199 (talk • contribs).
It's pretty clearly stated that it was designed to be the ultimate weapon to instill fear in rebellious planets and prevent them from acting up. Also, a ship traveling in hyperspace wouldn't hurt a planet, it was the other way around. <-Omicron(Leave a message at the BEEP!) 01:56, August 22, 2014 (UTC)
The hyperspace page ( [] )states that a collision between a ship in hyperspace and a planet could damage or destroy the planet and mentions an incident during the clone wars where a planet was destroyed by such a collision. If that's true it seems like the Death Star wouldn't be needed as the Empire could just destroy planets by crashing ships into them. It wouldn't instill terror in quite the way the Dath Star was meant to but it would be cheaper.—Unsigned comment by188.8.131.52 (talk • contribs).
most of that information is unsourced, so there's no way of knowing if it's canonically true. Plus, it might be possible to make a large fleet of ships to kamikazee into a planet to destroy it, but it would be much easier to make a battlestation that could destroy a planet and was presumed to be indestructible and be used multiple times. Again, this is all speculation and not really what this forum is for. <-Omicron(Leave a message at the BEEP!) 00:19, August 23, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that up.
Forgive me for not remembering the specific storyline, but in one of the newstrip comic stories, three Star Destroyers collide with a planet at hyperspace, and the planet is no worse for wear. I think it was one of the ones collected in "Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures." My apologies for not being precise with my sourcing.
