how does obi wan not recognize R2 when they meet on tatooine 0BBY he was anakin's droid for so long , how could he forget him, and on that note hows does lars not recognize c3po when he buys him
also how does vader not recognize his droids (escpecially 3po, when han gets frozen)
Vader does recognize 3PO and finds it strange that he'd find his old droid twenty years later and on Cloud City of all places, but by that point he doesn't care as he's tried to distance himself from who he was as Anakin. I believe that was in The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader. As for Obi-Wan, there are two things to think about. One, he only says "I don't recall ever owning a droid." Which he didn't, he was Anakin's. And two, Obi-Wan could have been feeling out the situation, giving vague answers so as to avoid dragging Luke into everything. Hope that helps. :D --Bella'Mia 10:35, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
Huh. I didn't even know about that one. That pretty much shows what was written in Rise and Fall of Vader. Thanks, Vandar.--Bella'Mia 11:05, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
So Lars doesn't recognise c3p0 when he buys him and thinks he's just another protocol droid?Danzig Corridor 12:00, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
That seems fair. When Owen's family owned C-3PO, he had silver-colored plates. By the end of the Clone Wars, and indeed by the time Owen purchased him again, he had gold-colored plates. Assuming that 3PO protocol droids look mostly the same and sound more or less the same, there is no way to distinguish one from another unless you ask them. It's like in 101 Dalmatians when the dogs roll in the soot to look like black labs. When you owned a silver droid, you don't expect the gold droid in front of you is yours, just like when you're looking for Dalmatians, you don't expect the black labs in front of you are yours. (edit conflict) According to the ANH junior novel, Owen Lars felt that C-3PO's voice sounded "vaguely familiar", but dismissed it because with his limited experience, he figured that all protocol droids sounded alike. As far as Obi-Wan, the junior novel states that he did recognize R2-D2, but chose to keep that fact to himself. —Master Jonathan(Jedi Council Chambers) 15:55, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
But Owen should have recognized Threepio when Threepio gave his designation, surely, with his minimal knowledge, Owen would know that all droids had a different designation. He must have known from Shmi, who would know this from Anakin, since she talked of Anakin often. —Unsigned comment byCharlieBethHayden (talk • contribs).
If you ask me Obi-Wan does recognize him (R2)(perhaps it could be thought as sort of retcon) We can clearly see how Obi-Wan looks R2 after Leia's message- he clearly thinks- "oh my gosh that cannot be him- i mean that cannot be it..." :P -Obi-Wan thinks that droids are supposed to be items- not characters- it is just like recognizing an old tv or fridge- how many times people think like: "Oh that is same microwave that my friend owned five years ago."
That is clearly said in ep2- "if droids would think..." So Obi-Wan don't believe that droids are really sentient- also Obi-Wans comments about r2 in "Downfall of the droid" clearly tells that Obi-Wan never thought that r2 has personality- he is surprised to hear that droids memory haven't been erased- ironically it is never erased completely- and so in ep4 -r2 tells that he is owned by Obi-Wan Kenobi -because in ep3 r2 thinks so- after Anakin started to behave strangely and disappeared -he decided that he is now Obi-Wan's. Obi-Wan never owned a droid r4 -working with him in ep2 and ep3 -she is jeditemple's -not his like r2 is Anakin's- according to old Clone Wars r2 is Padmé´s gift for knighted Anakin...
Well there is also another interesting thing in ep4 what comes to relationship between Obi-Wan and r2 and their knowledge of each other- when they are aboard Death Star Obi-Wan says "r2 can get into imperial network" (or something pretty similar) so he DOES know how astromechs work- even though never owned one himself- perhaps this r2 unit just reminds him of Anakin's personal droid that helped him years ago- and that was so similar -for some odd reason XD. Obi-Wan just thinks that r2 is just a one droid among others- recognizing "him" would just make him foolish and sentimental since it is just a machine not a living thing and jedi shouldn't think them as equals...
About Owen not recognizing Threepio- is that a surprise? He does look quite different with gold plates and don't seem to remember him either (memory erased) and he never heard his designation being the same as their old protocol droid's he thought they never even needed...
Also he wants to forget all about Anakin - since he don't want Luke to get excited about his father's life and Shmi must have said to Owen how 3po reminds her of Anakin...
It is all just irony -but works very well- r2 knows almost everything -but no one else don't- however blast to the head- which r2 received from his former master- during the battle of Yavin- may have had destroyed some memory banks of his....--Swashbuckler1138 12:48, March 8, 2010 (UTC)
Maybe. We'll never know, though, because most of what Obi-Wan said in the original trilogy was rather blatant lies. So he'd try to hide if he recognized them. --Golden Monkey 22:19, March 8, 2010 (UTC)
C3PO's memory had been erased. owen knew what C3P-O's past was, so when threepio started spounting stuff about binary load-lifters, that would have thrown owen off.
