Forums > Administrators' noticeboard archive > NB:Reported harassment: Clarification to get the facts out on the table

As an administrator, I am starting this thread on the Noticeboard in an attempt to clarify for the site in whole what seems to be a perpetuating problem among the fabric of the site. One of the primary focuses of an NB thread is dispute resolution, and that's what this thread is trying to do. Let it be said from the start that this is in no way an attempt to demean, ridicule, or embarrass any particular user, but rather, it is an attempt to try and get the facts out on the table so we as a community may move past this and better work toward what we're all here for from the start: to make Wookieepedia better.

It has come to my attention through email that Tommy9281 is reporting to an administrator purported "harassment" aimed at himself coming from myself and Graestan. In an honest, straightforward attempt to figure out just what was going on, Graestan made communication with Tommy9281 in Private Message on IRC. The following communication, as reported to me, occurred. Note that certain names have been removed to protect the innocent in this instance.

  • [17:11] <Graestan> Tommy, I'd appreciate if you'd please explain to me what is going on. I don't know why you're e-mailing [administrator]; I haven't spoken to you outside of a meeting atmosphere for months.
  • [17:11] <Tommy9281> What did he say to you?
  • [17:11] <Graestan> You're complaining about harassment.
  • [17:11] <Graestan> What is the harassment?
  • [17:12] <Graestan> I've been nothing more than just plain avoiding you because of situations like when you sent me that letter, so I'd appreciate if you'd point out just where I've harassed you.
  • [17:12] <Tommy9281> I'm not gonna play the "I don't know what you're talking about" game with you. You know how you carry on, so I'm sure you can figure out your own transgressions.
  • [17:12] <Graestan> When did I do what?
  • [17:13] <Graestan> Is this about the AC?
  • [17:13] <Tommy9281> And please email me for further communications. I don't like these back channel conversations.
  • [17:13] <Tommy9281> Thanks.
  • [17:13] <Graestan> Whatever, man.
  • [17:13] <Graestan> Me hearing I am apparently harassing you when I haven't contacted you at all in months, now that is harassment.
  • [17:13] <Tommy9281> Thank you.
  • [17:14] <Graestan> The full text of this conversation will be saved and posted, if it's any consolation.

For everyone's clarification, it remains that Tommy was recently removed from the AgriCorps reviewing panel by way of AC consensus due to inactivity. The AC made every effort to explain to him that this move was by no means a condemnation of his abilities, and was in no way a part of any personal grudge against him. He was explained to that he was still a part of the Inquisitorius, and thus still had the same "voting power" on the GAN page, and that he was more than welcome, and in fact encouraged, to continue reviewing on the GAN page. Should he continue to show commitment and dedication to the AC's reviewing responsibilities, the AC would not hesitate to readmit him to the roster.

Tommy, however, made it clear to more than one AC member, including myself, that he was not pleased with the move, which was understandable. However, despite our efforts, he refused to accept the explanation that he was not being targeted personally. Immediately after receiving word that he had been removed, Tommy made the following comment on another user's Rollback nomination on the RFU page. After reading this, I personally sent him a private email warning explaining to him that this sort of conduct on the site was unacceptable, and that if he had issues with another user(s), he should bring it to their attention personally in IRC rather than bringing problems to the site in a public way. As I explained to Tommy, I emailed him as a gesture out of respect for his status as an established user on the site, so that he would not feel like he was further being targeted or made an example of in any way. Tommy, however, as he explained to me, still believed there was something sinister amiss, personally aimed at him.

I should also note that many months ago, around this time last year, Tommy sent a private email to Graestan, explaining at length that he believed myself and Graestan were treating him unfairly. He went so far as to accuse me, personally, of being racist because I had once floated the idea to him of me nominating him for Rollback rights. When I never did, he believed, as I understand it, he was being discriminated against because of his heritage.

As Graestan has explained in the preceding conversation, he has made every effort to simply avoid Tommy because of these sorts of accusations he makes, as have I. I honestly cannot remember the last time I've personally spoken with Tommy outside of the aforementioned email I sent him. It's only just been brought to my attention as I write this today that Graestan and I have been purportedly harassing him, thus the reasoning behind creating this NB thread.

I want to make it perfectly clear for everyone that in no way is Tommy being personally targeted. I am not a racist, I do not hold any grudge against Tommy, and I am not discriminating against him nor am I working toward his downfall in any way. Again, to reiterate, and I think I speak for Graestan as well, I didn't even know this was going on until today. That he is accusing anyone of harassment is simply ridiculous, and to be frank, a bit insulting.

That Graestan directly asked Tommy to identify explicitly how he felt he was being harassed and yet failed to provide any kind of answer speaks for itself. Again, this is no way an attempt to embarrass anyone, certainly not Tommy himself. I just want this to stop before it gets out of hand.

Thank you.

  • I'm somewhat curious to see whether both parties, that being Grae and Tommy, gave consent for that private conversation to be posted and shared. To do so without their consent is a violation of freenode policy and could get one K-lined. If the appropriate permissions have not been obtained, I would like to remind all administrators and users who read this forum that private conversations are just that: private and should not be shared. Thanks. Atarumaster88 Jedi Order (Talk page) 23:01, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
    • While I appreciate your concern, Ataru (epic 9_9), Graestan did give me consent, and Tommy was notified that the conversation was going to be posted, as can be seen. So, hopefully I don't get K-lined. 9_9 Toprawa and Ralltiir 23:06, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
      • Okay, just making sure everyone was aware of the policy. Atarumaster88 Jedi Order (Talk page) 23:14, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
        • While I have absolutely nothing to hide, I still never agreed nor gave any consent to post this. Like the conversation shows, I was simply told by the other party involved that it would be, "if it's any consolation". P.S.-"notification" is not consent.Tommy Dark side Master SWGTCG (Nine two eight one) 23:17, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
          • The fact remains that Graestan "notified" you that this was going to be posted, short of asking if it was ok, to which you provided no objection. Toprawa and Ralltiir 23:18, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
          • Additionally, I should add, before someone else tries to condemn me, that nothing was done here maliciously. As Tommy said, there's nothing really to hide here. If I have breached policy, then it is my own fault. Toprawa and Ralltiir 23:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
            • Per the last part of my statement above.Tommy Dark side Master SWGTCG (Nine two eight one) 23:24, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
              • Then go get Freenode staff and K-line me. Because this is ridiculous. Toprawa and Ralltiir 23:26, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
                • Outside of both of your personal dislike for me, I would ask you and everyone to remain objective about the point of this thread, which is a genuine attempt to try and resolve this dispute that seems to have been brewing for far too long. If I've broken Freenode policy, fine, but again, there was no sinister motive behind this, so if someone has something relevant to add to this thread in relation to the intended topic, please feel free to leave your two cents. Otherwise, please drop it. Toprawa and Ralltiir 23:39, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
                  • One, I don't have any personal dislike for you. Two, if I had known there would have been this much stink over a simple reminder of policy, I might not have posted this. Let's just keep it professional. As for the main topic of this post, I'm not really aware of the interactions between the users mentioned here, and so it's going to be hard for me to make any kind of constructive post without specifics of harassment one way or another. If there is a policy issue, then that's something for the administration to look at, but for personal disputes, I think they're usually settled best in private. :) Atarumaster88 Jedi Order (Talk page) 23:43, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
                    • From what I see here it looks like Tommy may have possibly overreacted on several occassions, but I haven't really heard a defense from Tommy, which I think he should write and show it to everyone. -MecenarylordEnter if you dare 12:57, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Oh, I'm very interested indeed in seeing what evidence there might be of supposed harassment on my part. Especially with an explanation of how my behavior constitutes harassment and not site administration or simple voting procedures. Graestan(Talk) 13:29, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
    • Grae, I practically never agree with you and Tope, but here it just looks like Tommy is making a big deal out of a little thing...-MecenarylordEnter if you dare 23:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
