Hello Wookieepedians. It is I, Supreme Commander Slug. Not giving my full title because it's about three times as long as as the main page here.
I've been observing this wiki and making the very occasional edit for several years, and frankly I'm appalled at the lack of modernisation. You're still using this method of community discussion instead of enabling forums, you have no chat or blogs, hell, you haven't even got the old visual editor (while the new one's not worth it at the moment the old one is an excellent tool).
The very fact that I'm writing this in the manner that I am says an awful lot about how very correct my first point is. The fewer people comment
You may claim, "we're an encyclopedia, not a forum." If that's the case then go and create a separate site and don't make the rest of wikia look bad with your outdated methods of going about things. This is a site for wikis, not encyclopedias, and wikis are meant to be for a community and not just information. You're not doing yourselves justice at all. This is the largest repository of balanced, accurate Star wars knowledge on the internet and you're harming it.
Personally I blame this on fleshy admins. THE FLESH IS WEAK. Build your wiki back up with the Iron of new forums, chat and user blogs. Iron is eternal and this wiki shall be eternal too, but only if you heed me.
That's actually pretty funny, but it's still a bit early for an April Fool's prank. The state of that wikia, my friend, and its refusal of the new features you described, is the choice of the community as a whole, not just one made by the admins. You may not value the fact that "we're an encyclopedia, not a forum," but we do. despite how "cool" and "easier" they may look, those features do not fit our needs and our aims. By the way, I should mention that "easier" often rhymes with "idiot-proof," and an idiot-proof interface usually doesn't lead to an improvement in quality. On the contrary, it often opens the ways to a bunch of poorly-experimented users who will add "I like this guy LOL" comments at the bottom of every page—something nobody here desires. Starwarsly yours. --LelalMekha (talk) 13:22, February 8, 2014 (UTC)
There are reasons why we choose not to enable these 'features'. As Lelal stated, we aren't here so people can talk about how much they like this guy. As stated in What Wookieepedia is not, we are not a forum for general discussion. There is nothing wrong with they way we operate. Supreme Emperor (talk) 15:15, February 8, 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your opinion and your uninformed decision to blame the admins for this "stagnation". Here at Wookieepedia, we believe in democratic decision-making, which is why the community votes whether to implement new features (for an example, see Forum:CT:Petition to Wikia to leave user talk pages alone) instead of the admins activating the latest Wikia toys unilaterally. I'm afraid, however, that our focus is on building the most comprehensive Star Wars encyclopedia out there, not in creating a fan forum. Just gotta deal with that, I guess. That said, our approach to things seems to have worked out quite well, considering we're among the biggest wikis on Wikia, with almost a million pageviews per day. We're almost at 110,000 articles, of which close to 5,000 have gone through a peer review process to ensure they are completely sourced and cover all the source material. I challenge you to find a single wiki where the featured content is this extensive and well-written. Cheers, a fleshy admin. 1358(Talk) 15:22, February 8, 2014 (UTC)
I think you would have better luck getting Wookieepedia to adopt new Wikia features if you toned down the rhetoric and suggested only adopting those specific features which you think would make this a better encyclopedia. (Yes, I still think limited video content from official YouTube channels etc. would be a great idea.) Please note this is a wiki whose purpose is to build a Star Wars encyclopedia -- features which would only make it more like Facebook, the Jedi Council Forums, or a blog network, will be rejected as at best unnecessary and at worst a distraction. —Silly Dan(talk) 15:50, February 8, 2014 (UTC)
I do kinda wish we had one Facebook-like feature - a "Like" button. So I could "Like" Culator's response to the OP. I guess I'll just have to settle for writing it out in text and Wikicode, like the ancient editors of yore. Yours, etc. etc., sincerely, and so forth, jSarek (talk) 05:09, February 10, 2014 (UTC)
I agree with everyone that's replied, especially 1358 and Culator (in that order). —MJ—Jedi Council Chambers 05:59, February 10, 2014 (UTC)
Precisely per all the above. Specific websites serve specific functions. If you want a "cool" forum, look to somewhere else like TFN. Wookieepedia is an encyclopedia, despite what you might believe.—Cal Jedi(Personal Comm Channel) 14:31, February 10, 2014 (UTC)
