Forums > Senate Hall > SH:Problem with editing a page

I was doing some general browsing, and I noticed that, on the pages for the SWTOR trailer films (Deceived, Hope, etc.) the entries for "preceded by" and "followed by" in the infobox didn't match up with the dates. So, I tried to fix the problem, but I hit a snag. The edit preview looked fine, but when I tried to save the edit, it was flagged as potentially malicious, something about mangled code, and mentioned something about a specific error code being "VisualEditor derpage," whatever that means, which I couldn't find anything about, either on Wookieepedia or Google. Does anyone have any suggestions? --Vathrain (talk) 03:01, February 20, 2017 (UTC)

  • Short answer: Don't use Visual Editor. It creates certain formatting and logistical issues, so some of our admins created a filter that prevents certain edits from going through. We strongly recommend using regular source mode to make your edits. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 06:03, February 20, 2017 (UTC)
    • How difficult is it to modify the code of this filter? I ask because an error message reading "Visual Editor creates certain formatting and logistical issues, so a filter prevents certain edits from going through. We strongly recommend using regular source mode to make your edits" tells users exactly what the problem is and how to solve it. An error message reading "VisualEditor derpage" does neither of these things. Changing the error message would make it more user-friendly, especially to new editors, the ones most likely to be using the Visual Editor. Asithol (talk) 23:07, February 25, 2017 (UTC)
      • Instructions for changing editors would also be useful as well. To most people, the editor is just the editor. The distinction between Visual Editor and source editor is a wonkish one that most people aren't going to know about. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 23:12, February 25, 2017 (UTC)
        • (Ping so this thread doesn't expire before the issue is resolved.) Asithol (talk) 19:32, March 24, 2017 (UTC)
        • Does it make sense to move this to the pinned bug thread, or just pin this thread, so it doesn't disappear before an admin is able to address it? Asithol (talk) 00:05, April 22, 2017 (UTC)
          • I've gone ahead and pinned this thread. If you think moving the issue to the bug thread is a better solution, feel free. My concern is that the issue not fall below the radar before someone with access to the filter code can resolve it. Simple problems like this are the sorts of things that can be frustrating for new users and drive them away before they get accustomed to how things work. Asithol (talk) 18:29, May 20, 2017 (UTC)
            • Hi, the warning message in question is located at MediaWiki:Custom-visualeditor-infobox-warning (that is, assuming Wikia actually displays them in VE—at some point all you got was something about extension hooks). If you guys have any suggestions I'd be more than pleased. 1358 (Talk) 21:55, May 22, 2017 (UTC)
