Flowers are blooming! Buds are appearing on trees! People are walking their dogs again! None of that really has to do with Wookieepedia, but Spring's general aura of hopefulness and rebirth will surely infect our article writing! Soon it will be the month of May, and Wookieepedia's annual summer-speedup will have all of us itching to write, write, and write some more. And what better way to humour our fancies than a barn-burner?
This May will be the one year anniversary of our Wacky wild Wookiee windup, and, I think, a perfect time to once again bring the community together and work toward a common goal. To anyone unfamiliar with the barn burner: We choose a topic and spend a month writing status articles. #1 was Wookiees, #2 was weapons, and #3 was The Phantom Menace. It's a great community-building exercise that sees us all do a lot of writing, review each other's work, and just generally pool our efforts toward a fun and positive goal.
Fred and I have been discussing this on IRC, and while we both agree that the TPM barn burner was a great idea, it did bring with it some limitations. It didn't breed Comprehensive articles very well, and quickie GANs were impossible due to the vast amount of sources and adaptations that needed to be checked. As such, we're kind of leaning toward returning to the theme being In-universe rather than Out-of-Universe. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head would be the HoloNet News website, which could lead to all three kinds of status articles and usually only requires a CSWE check.
Anyway, let me know if you're all interested in this, and if you are, begin throwing out ideas for a theme! I'm also looking for someone to lead this, so feel free to volunteer your services. If this happens, let's make it huge. Your GAs will be on the Main Page this time around, and your CAs just might appear in that Random article box! Yahoo! Menkooroo 06:54, April 7, 2012 (UTC)
Great idea! I swear I'll lead one of these sometime, but for now the summer is still too in motion for me. As for themes, some of the ones that have been bandied about in the past have been New Jedi Order members, Galactic Republic Senators, and astromech droids. It might also be fun to do something like "arts and leisure" (which would include music, musicians, games, pastimes, sports, etc.). Non-sentient critters might also be fun. ~Savage 14:25, April 7, 2012 (UTC)
Criminal underworld theme. Crimelords, pirates, card sharks, bounty hunters, bounties, corrupt officials, thieves & thefts, security systems, hangouts, notorious ships, personalized guns, bad cops, and maybe even good cops (the anti-crime). Only problem is that it might be too broad a topic. SinisterSamurai 04:36, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Historically, broader has been better. "Weapons" was chosen over anything more specific, and we knocked it out of the park. That's why I like your idea. :) Project: Underworld. The possibilities are endless! Menkooroo 05:14, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
I'm of course partial toward Bob's arts and liesure idea due to my obsession with music and having founded WP:ENT. :P MasterFred(Whatever) 05:11, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Ooh, I like Project: Underworld! I might actually get something done this time because there'd be a ton of TOR crossover. Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 05:44, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
What about articles based on the Timothy Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy? Its soon to be the 20th anniversary of Dark Force Rising and the 21st anniversary of HTTE. It would include characters, events, and vehicles and locations that were created by Zahn himself for the trilogy. We could also get a couple of people dedicated to cleaning up the Grand Admiral himself's article. DjMack 20:53, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Although I don't do that much Barnburning, I think it would be good for the community to select a topic that spans all (or most) eras of publishing because it provides more flexibility and non-exclusivity with selecting articles to fit within the topic. That may have been why the TPM one didn't do as well as we had hoped—if people didn't like writing about the TPM era, the only articles available to them tended to be the major ones like Darth Maul or Padmé Amidala, which are ambitious projects but unrealistic ones for the Barnburner's span of a month. The Underworld is one of those topics that will give everyone the opportunity to pick what they want, within their chosen time frame, and still be a part of the project. CC7567(talk) 21:13, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Also of note: The Underworld played a large role in Zahn's trilogy. :D I like the idea, DJMack, but I tend to agree with CC. Limiting the topic to a single timeframe didn't work so well last time. Menkooroo 21:17, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
I'm fine with the underworld theme. There are still lots of WP:ENT crossovers under that umbrella (clubs, slave dancers, etc. lol). MasterFred(Whatever) 21:45, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
Alright then, I also support the underworld idea. The underworld was always my favorite aspect of Star Wars. DjMack 22:01, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
If we want something super broad, I prefer arts and leisure over underworld, since I don't feel like the underworld is a neglected topic on the Wook, while arts and leisure (beyond the CA level) kind of is. But I'd be down with underworld too. I just think the BBs have in the past been good ways to focus efforts on otherwise overlooked areas of Star Wars. ~Savage 23:42, April 8, 2012 (UTC)
At the same time, arts and leisure would be more of a "chore" than anything, and I doubt theres really that many articles pertaining to that subject. There's plenty of background cantina and Jabba's Palace patrons that could be easily whipped into CA or GA category. And come on, cantina aliens and bounty hunters would just be plain out fun. DjMack 01:14, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
"Chore" is in the eye of the beholder! :P And Category:Entertainment reveals hundreds of possibilities, plus we could throw Category:Holidays in there too. Besides, what else goes better with Spring Break! :D Like I said, I'm cool with "Underworld," but I don't feel like that's really a needed area for us to focus on. Consider this my final pitch. ~Savage 01:24, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, it was discussed during the original bb thread that we not do themes that are specifically covered by a WookieeProject. This is the case with art and leisure and WP:ENT. MasterFred(Whatever) 02:32, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I like the underworld idea, but at the same time I like Fred's idea of focusing on the subject of a WP. Decisions, decisions! OLIOSTER(talk) 19:02, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I apparently can't read. I vote underworld! OLIOSTER(talk) 19:10, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I've mentioned this before, and will mention it now: Coruscant and everything related to it. This would encompass a large number of different types of articles that would still be tied to one thing. 1358(Talk) 18:06, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
This is another idea that I really like (Remember, Underworld and Entertainment are great ideas, but there's still time for plenty more great ideas!). Focused enough yet broad enough for people to use their imagination. Menkooroo 19:17, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I was pretty fond of the Coruscant suggestion the last couple times. MasterFred(Whatever) 19:35, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
How about the Coruscant underworld? :P Seriously, Coruscant is a good idea, too. I'm cool with pretty much whatever except for something military-based. But if others want something military-based, I'll still try to pitch in. ~Savage 21:16, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
While Coruscant is a big planet, its just not an open enough subject to me. OLIOSTER(talk) 21:24, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
What about a variation on the original theme? There are plenty of species (Seen here) that are under-represented among our status articles. How about Twi'leks, Rodians or Mon Calamari? --Eyrezer 12:11, April 10, 2012 (UTC)
If someone FAs Aayla Secura, sure. :P Though I'm not sure choosing a similar topic would be a that good idea — some people just don't like writing one kind of article. It's better to have one topic that covers different article types, IMO. 1358(Talk) 13:58, April 10, 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Xd; however, a species-related theme does not restrict the project to one type of article. I wrote a CA on a piece of music written by a Wookiee for the first barn-burner. MasterFred(Whatever) 15:21, April 10, 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure I think a tie to a WookieeProject is such a good idea; it curtails far too many possibilities, in my opinion. A tie-in isn't bad, mind you; I just don't think we should foreclose any possibilities by making that a criterion. Another idea, then, might be droids in general, rather than simply astromechs. We don't have many status articles on droids in comparison to other character articles, plus it might inspire some folks to tackle droid models too. Just more grist for the mill. :) ~Savage 14:42, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps we need a CT for this? Compile the suggestions made here and lets vote on them. OLIOSTER(talk) 15:13, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
No CT. Let's keep everything in here and try to figure out which theme the most people like, and the theme that in which most people would participate. The major contenders so far seem to be: Arts and Leisue, Underworld, Coruscant, a specific species, and droids. Which themes sound the most interesting, and, most importantly, which themes would lead you to participate? Menkooroo 16:08, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
I'll participate in any of them, but I'm more interested in Arts, Coruscant, and Underworld. MasterFred(Whatever) 16:36, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
From what stuff I'm most familiar with, Underworld/Crime and Droids are the two that I'd be able to do stuff with. The other options (except Coruscant) overlap with a Wookieeproject in some way, which isn't a good idea because I'd just join said Wookieeproject if I wanted to write articles about those topics. nayayen★talk 18:45, April 11, 2012 (UTC)
Re my initial suggestion, character articles are by far the most prevalent, and we know that the Wooiee topic worked very successfully. I don't see the benefit in going for a more obscure topic, if people are less likely to actually write and nominate. --Eyrezer 02:35, April 14, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, what I'm most interested in is what topics will actually see people participate. I feel like Bob's suggestion of a droid topic would; droid articles are essentially character articles (Barn Burner 1), but they're different enough that many of us would get a chance to try something new (Barn Burner 2). Menkooroo 02:58, April 14, 2012 (UTC)
After thinking about it for a while, I cast my vote for droids, how about everyone else?--Exiled Jedi(Greetings) 16:43, April 20, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, cool. I was getting the impression that nobody would really participate, and I was considering calling it off. Even now, I'm thinking it might be best to wait until June. Give people some time to prepare and try to get more people interested. What do you guys think? Menkooroo 02:52, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
I think that this is a great idea and I would certainly support and try to contribute to a droid-themed barn burner. Also, I like your idea of waiting until June, because that would give us plenty of time to prepare articles and to try to get more users onboard. --Jinzler 18:01, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
I too am OK with droids (and with any other theme for that matter), and I can begin to contribute in earnest beginning in May or June. April is awful with finals, and I wonder if others are facing the same hurdle. ~Savage 18:10, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I will have tons of free time on school computers in May since most of my classes will have ended. June is not good for me at all. MasterFred(Whatever) 18:26, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
The second half of June might be a little bit busy for me, I think that May would be better in my case.--Exiled Jedi(Greetings) 18:40, April 24, 2012 (UTC)
May it is. Any last-minute volunteers to lead it? Menkooroo 04:39, April 25, 2012 (UTC)
I might be interested in doing it. What exactly is involved in setting it up?--Exiled Jedi(Greetings) 16:12, April 25, 2012 (UTC)
What all are we going to count as elible articles related to droids. Some topic I might consider would be Droid designers, droid manufacturers, and droid accessories. Does anyone think we should have any of these? I am trying to put together a project page since no one else has volunteered to run the project. This is going to be fun!--Exiled Jedi(Greetings) 12:13, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd say you should count all that, plus droid characters and droid models. The droid accessories in particular need lots of work; R3-series astromech droid is swimming in redlinks... ~Savage 12:22, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
Setting it up really just involves creating the SH thread --- check out the three previous ones for ideas but feel free to make it your own. Suggestions and a list of previous status articles are always a good idea. Menkooroo 01:45, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
Just would like to add that since we have several good suggestions, perhaps we should just use them in succession for the time being. Perhaps Underworld after the droid one? OLIOSTER(talk) 16:49, May 3, 2012 (UTC)
Wish I was able to contribute to this beforehand but I SOLIDLY support Barn-Burner: Underworld after droids. -- Riffsyphon1024 21:51, May 6, 2012 (UTC)
