So Jimmy Wales (yeah, the guy from all those annoying WE WANT MONEY banner ads on Wikipedia) announced today that Wikipedia will be shut down on Wednesday as a protest against SOPA.

Does anyone know if the Wikia sites will be following suit?

- Wikia and Wikipedia aren't affiliated, so Wikia would have made a formal announcement if they planned to join Wales in this. NaruHina Talk

- I was sure Wikia was another Jimmy Wales baby. That's the only reason I even asked. Did he divest from it or something? -- DigiFluid 00:33, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
- Wales may be a co-founder of Wikia, Inc., but it is still a separate entity from the Wikimedia Foundation. - Esjs(Talk) 17:55, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

- FWIW, Mozilla is participating in this as well. I don't know what this will mean exactly for Wookieepedia and FireFox users. Toprawa and Ralltiir 00:05, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
- I understood that SOPA was just recently killed/withdrawn? Wouldn't that make the protest moot? Taral, Dark Lord of the Sith -Just shy, not antisocial: You can talk to me!- 16:24, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
- PIPA, the senate counterpart, is still alive. For what it's worth, Wikia has given green light for blacking out Wikia wikis if they feel like doing it. 1358 (Talk) 16:26, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
- Just FWIW, SOPA was not killed/withdrawn; it was simply pushed back for a later date. Jonjedigrandmaster (Talk) 01:13, January 19, 2012 (UTC)
- Addendum: Apparently both SOPA and PIPA were shelved on the 20th, sending both into some congressional purgatory. Sure it might come up again, but not anytime soon. -- Riffsyphon1024 10:25, January 21, 2012 (UTC)
- Yep, both are shelved. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they come back in some modified version, such as some kind of "Protect children from porn on the internet". No one could oppose that based on the name of the bill. 1358 (Talk) 10:28, January 21, 2012 (UTC)
- Would have been a great opportunity to post a header reading: "Did you know that the evil Dark Lord of the Sith/tyranical Supreme Chancellor Palpatine also restricted the freedom of online information?" Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 10:43, January 21, 2012 (UTC)

- Seeing how several Wikia wikis are jumping on this, we may want to at least post some image of acknowledgement on the Main Page, while keeping the wiki open and active. -- Riffsyphon1024 02:21, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
