Forum:SH: Suggest we move. Wikia is too crammed with ads and spam. It chokes our browsers and slows everything down.

The changes made to Wikia are detrimental to every wiki hosted here. The advertisements be they in-line or pop-up slow everything down and put users at risk. I think it may be time to pull up and move like TFwiki did. ZeldaTheSwordsman 21:56, December 20, 2011 (UTC)
- I suggest you change your wiki skin to Monobook. That will remove the advertisements for the most part.--Cal Jedi

I agree with the sentiment, but it just won't work in practice IMO. Wikia is a terrible host--making (bad) unilateral decisions that affect thousands and thousands of users, and choking out their sites with advertisements.
It would be NICE if the Wiki model could be moved en masse offsite to our own domain, but I can't imagine the cost (in both man-hours and in bandwidth bills) would be worth the effort. DigiFluid 19:42, December 29, 2011 (UTC)
- Moreover, because of the nature of the CC-BY-SA license we agree to, we can't force a move; if we copy all of our content to a new location and delete it here, Wikia can choose to simply restore all the deleted pages, and there's nothing that we can do about it. jSarek 06:28, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
- That's not really an issue if there is a consensus... Trazeris 14:25, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
- What does consensus have to do with anything. Wikia hosts us, and they can revert all the deleted pages back to their original state. It doesn't matter whether there is a consensus here or not. MasterFred

- A wiki with no community is not a wiki: if everyone leaves Wikia behavior wouldn't be a problem. Anyway that was just a thought, I will refrain from intervening in Wikia-related talk from now because I have a biasTrazeris
- A wiki with 88,000+ ready-made articles, our extensive infrastructure, and links from across the internet (including from the official Star Wars website), will generate a community with or without us. jSarek 09:42, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
- You're right. The evolution of wowpedia/wowwiki will be interesting in this respect. Trazeris 12:21, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
- You need look no further than Teletraan I/TFWiki for an example of how things would go. DD97Which bear is best? 20:18, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
- The external wiki is doing pretty well...Trazeris 21:13, January 5, 2012 (UTC)
