Hello, I'd like to propose an article that is subject of some controversy - Obidala - The idea behind it is to show that George Lucas intended somehow a triangle (not fulfilled, but suggested). The article would NOT be regarding fan fics and it would only show CANON material that supports Obidala in a way - almost in a platonic way, such are the cases of Revenge of the Sith novel (and one deleted scene within a documentary) and the Last of the Jedi series. Also, there's a quote taken from a CD jacket of the Phantom Menace:

On several occasions in the revised draft, there is mention of Padme's growing affection for Obi-Wan. When the Jedi argues with Amidala regarding Jar-Jar's fate, the script indicates that Padme is "impressed that Obi-Wan is able to stand up to the Queen." As they prepare to enter Mos Espa, she "gives Obi-Wan a long, adoring look." Once in Mos Espa, Padme watches Obi-Wan "with interest and respect," and it is noted that her "eyes make the powerful Jedi nervous."

Obidala, in a way, is one of the reasons of Anakin's turn - Palpatine planting him seeds of doubt:

"Ah, that—well, that is the difficult part. The disturbing part. It seems that Master Kenobi has been in contact with a certain Senator who is known to be among the leaders of this cabal. Apparently, very close contact. The rumor is that he was seen leaving this Senator's residence this very morning, at an... unseemly hour." "Who?" Anakin opened his eyes and sat forward. "Who is this Senator? Let's go question him." "I'm sorry, Anakin. But the Senator in question is, in fact, a her. A woman you know quite well, in fact." "You—" He wasn't hearing this. He couldn't be. "You mean—" Anakin choked on her name.

And the quotes goes on and on. I will gladly bring whatever canon proof this idea.

Again, is only to set it as a reference, not as an actual fact regarding a relationaship, but just to point out that Lucas and the canon authors had it in mind.

Thanks a lot :)

  • I think this could work as an article in Category:Star Wars culture. The whole Obidala thing is very popular in the fan-fic community and is probably worth mentioning somewhere. --Azizlight 23:24, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Yes, we have all sorts of fandom theories as well as canon here, you just have to make it obvious that it is a fandom article. Start with Obidala? :) -- Riffsyphon1024 23:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
    • The article would ONLY point a canon point of view. There are some interviews with Lucas where he expresses that he orginally was to make a triangle, but he didn't want to fall in the same cliche as with Han-Leia-Luke, but it's also some information that adds to the evolution of the script he had in mind. • I don't like it one bit, and I think it sets a dangerous precedence. I'm probably in the minority on this issue though, so I'll just close my eyes and suppress this whole thing. --Imp 23:33, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
    • La la la la la. I'm not listening. Actually, I'm not concerned about it.--Lord OblivionSith holocronSith Emblem 23:35, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
    • I think the precedent may already have been set with Endor Holocaust, come to think of it. —Silly Dan (talk) 01:05, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
      • Perhaps we could have an article that covers a number of "shipper" pairings? - like Obidala, Jaina/Jag/Kyp/Zekk/whatever, Cade/Marasiah (seems to be the new one) or whatever else there is - \\Captain Kwenn// Ahoy! 09:17, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
        • I was suggested to start the article under my profile, for the time being. Is still in "gathering" stage, so it's still incomplete. Here's what I have in mind Darth Jenny Rose 14:25, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
        • I've been considering a shipper subsection in the fanfic article, actually, to pull them out of the term list. -- Dark Spork 20:38, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
  • If we approve this, we will be setting a precedent to approve Marakin and all the other fanwank pairings out there. StarNeptuneTalk to me! 15:55, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Well, a couple of differences to that specific theory. 1) Obidala has far wider notability - it's bigger than one proponent in one overly long message board thread. 2) It is the result of overt references, both in and out of universe, as opposed to meticulously reading *against* the text. jSarek 09:05, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
  • How about adding this to the BTS sections of the Padme and Obi-Wan articles instead? =) --Imp 00:16, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
  • It looks like she has her stuff together here. It's not some random fanwankery either. I know that the others will also want their spot in the sun, but isn't it our duty to report on everything the Star Wars universe throws us, whether it be canon or not (that of course does not include the Star Trek articles popping up recently). -- Riffsyphon1024 02:54, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Would be worth a BTS mention, particularly if there's enough in that interview with Lucas she mentions to show how the script came about, why he chose to avoid writing a 'love triangle', etc.Tocneppil 11:40, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm hunting down that interview. It was originally posted at, but I can't find it, if anyone knows a site - relaiable site - where I can find a collection of interviews, please let me know - Thanks! Darth Jenny Rose 19:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I'd have gone against it entirely but having read it, I thought it was quite interesting and could be worth mentioning. I'd go along with Imp and add it to the BTS sections of the two articles, though. Green Tentacle (Talk) 16:52, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Well, we have a precendent and I think this has been gone about the right way, asking for support and having information at the ready. Personally I'd rather have the Obidala article itself redirect to a mention in the BTS for Amidala or Obi-Wan. If you have enough information that can be presented intelligently as totally non-canon, then I suppose an article would be appropriate with enough support. Should we put it to a vote, or would that be too formal? Wildyoda 17:09, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Sometimes there needs to be formality so if its a vote you want, it's a vote you have. :) -- Riffsyphon1024 23:37, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

  2. I'd rather have a separate article than clutter up Padmé's or especially Obi-Wan's with speculation. Besides, it's got a snappy name. Obidala. Rolls off the tongue. I wonder why they didn't come up with a combo-name like that for Kirk and Spock... oh, wait... Enochf 10:03, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
  3. If this is going to be an article, then the respective BTS sections on the characters need a brief explanation of the issue with a link to the Obidala article. Adamwankenobi 15:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
  4. I think it's important that we cover fandom issues, too. Yes, even if it means 'supporting' alternate readings of the canon, a Marakin article and etc. They're better left in an alternate catagory than in the main articles, certainly. Maybe we can whip up a button for them, if we don't have one already. ::coughcoughEndorHolocaust:: -- Dark Spork 20:35, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Exactly what Spork is saying. We're representing all sides of fandom here. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:52, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
