Forums > Senate Hall archive > SH Archive/Category:XXX characters?

This is perhaps a bit nitpicky, but I'm sure someone would eventually point it out: if the encyclopedia is supposed to be entirely in-universe (except for real world things, naturally), shouldn't the "xxx characters" categories, most notably found in Category:Individuals by faction but perhaps other places too, be "xxx members" or "xxx personnel" or whatever? It doesn't seem like an in-universe resource would call people "characters" except for some of the more shady characters. ;) Anyway, I'm guessing one of the bots could be sent to 'fix' this if anyone actually agrees with me. • I think this was supposed to be changed a while back, but it doesn't look the transformation was finished. If we get an admin's opinion, we could probably change the rest of the "character" cats. —Xwing328(Talk) 04:56, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
  • This was supposed to be converted but was unfinished. I recommend that it be completed to completely wookify the IU section. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:00, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm converting them slowly with R2's help, but I'm not sure what to do with Category:Jedi characters and Category:Sith characters. - Sikon 07:49, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Probably Jedi and Sith individuals? -- Riffsyphon1024 07:50, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
      • Individuals is exactly what I'd suggest too. - JMAS 19:12, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
        • I've started changing a few - Confed. characters to Confed. individuals and Trade Federation characters to Trade Federation members. It's not too hard, so if anyone feels like compiling a list of categories to change, that would make it even easier. —Xwing328(Talk) 20:11, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
          • From what I can see by doing a search for "characters" in the Category namespace, here are the remaining ones that need changed:
            1. Category:New_Republic_characters
            2. Category:Old_Republic_characters
            3. Category:Second_Imperium_characters
            4. Category:Military_characters
            5. Category:Galactic_Alliance_characters
          • It also seems that there are a lot of categories about characters which have "characters" in their description, such as "This category is for characters affliated with the Galactic Alliance". Should things like that be changed as well? Uxviii 21:14, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
            • Thanks, and yes to your question. *edit* And I'm going to change Category:Military characters to Military personnel.—Xwing328(Talk) 21:20, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
              • Alright, I think I got all of the instances of "characters" in the descriptions of categories, except for those where it looks to be required and Category:Force-sensitives's category tag, where I'm not sure what to do. Other than that minor thing I'd say this case is closed :) Uxviii 01:55, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Previous consensus?Edit

The following is an excerpt taken from Forum:CT Archive/Characters to Individuals. A clear consensus on what to change the categories to never was reached. This should probably be revisited. —Xwing328(Talk) 21:20, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Characters = Individuals
  • Black Sun characters = Black Sun members
  • Bounty hunters = no change
  • Character stubs = still unknown on this
  • Confederacy characters = Confederacy members
    • Or "Confederacy leaders", "Confederacy commanders", "Confederacy soliders" etc --
      • "Confederate citizens" as a catch-all? Yrfeloran 20:14, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

SparqMan 03:27, 14 Oct 2005 (UTC)

  • Corellians = no change
  • Criminals = no change
  • Dark Jedi characters = Dark Jedi
  • Families = no change
  • Imperial characters = Imperial individuals
    • "citizens"? Yrfeloran 20:14, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
    • This could be "Imperial personnel," or even just "Imperials" jSarek 11:18, 18 Jul 2005 (UTC)
  • Jedi characters = Jedi (but this would conflict with the all-purpose Jedi category that exists already)
    • "Jedi Knights", "Jedi Masters", "Jedi Padawans", etc. --SparqMan 03:27, 14 Oct 2005 (UTC)
  • Mandalorians = no change
  • Musicians = no change
  • New Republic characters = New Republic individuals
  • Old Republic characters = Old Republic individuals
    • These last two could be "Old/New Republic personnel." jSarek 11:18, 18 Jul 2005 (UTC)
      • "Personnel" kinda implies that they are an employ, which is IMO a little too specific for this "catch all" category. WhiteBoy 07:29, 6 Aug 2005 (UTC)
        • Is "New Republicans" silly? Obviously this could be broken down into "New Republic politicians", "New Republic Defense Force officers" etc. --SparqMan 03:27, 14 Oct 2005 (UTC)
  • Podracers = no change
    • Change to Podracer pilots, as podracers are the vehicles. -- Riffsyphon1024 06:46, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Political characters = Politicians
  • Rebel Alliance characters = Rebel Alliance individuals
    • Again, "Rebel Alliance personnel" would work, as would just "Rebels." jSarek 11:18, 18 Jul 2005 (UTC)
    • "Rebel Alliance individuals" or "Rebel Alliance personnel". Rebels could be confused with generic rebels (Resistance fighters). -Fnlayson 21:47, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Sith characters = Sith lords or Sith Lords
    • Sith individuals? -- Riffsyphon1024 19:17, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
    • Sith adherents? - breathesgelatinTalk 21:33, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Possibly New Republic characters, Old Republic characters and Galactic Empire characters should become 'citizens' as a generic catch-all, though this wouldn't be appropriate for some of the criminal elements, given that their citizenship is not guaranteed.Blastsword Champion
