This template is getting ridiculously huge. We need to make seperate templates for seasons and comics or hide each individual section and I have no idea how to do it. Thanks! --Vandar Tokare42 (Talk to the hand) 20:58, August 29, 2010 (UTC)
It can be hidden for a reason. Perhaps we should set it to hidden by default? OLIOSTER(talk) 22:06, August 29, 2010 (UTC)
For the TV show episodes, you may just wish to show the episode number in the season, not the actual name, kinda like they do on starwars.com and our Insider template. —Xwing328(Talk) 22:42, August 29, 2010 (UTC)
I would support a piped version of this template regarding the episodes, with episode numbers displaying, while the link to the named version is still there. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:48, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
Here is what the template would look like with just numbers for episodes. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:59, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
I kind of prefer the episode names, simply out of virtue of the fact that the template is there for the sake of convenience, and I imagine that most people would remember the episode name as opposed to its number. At least I do, anyway. Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 19:40, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
I've taken it a step further by condensing the webcomics, which were also taking up quite a bit of space, down into their respective seasons rather than having them in their own section; additionally, I've added more line breaks so that it's actually a reasonable width compared to other similar navigation templates rather than taking up the full width of your screen. Check it out here. Does this look good, or did I go too far with the comics? (edit conflict) Trayus: even with numbers, you can still get the episode name by hovering over the number. —Master Jonathan(Jedi Council Chambers) 19:47, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
MJ: Oh yes, I know, but again, templates like this are about convenience, and hovering over numbers until I find the one I want doesn't seem very...convenient. But it's not going to kill me. But I'm not a fan of the comics placed next to the episode number. It's more complex than it needs to be. I don't know, maybe its just me but I don't see the issue with a large template. TCW is a large subject, so a large template is warranted. Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 20:07, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
I know it's big, but you can just hide it. FWIW, if we do adopt the new variation, having just numbers isn't so bad; you can just hover over the numbers and view the page name. Chack Jadson(Talk) 21:11, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
I have been thinking about redesigning that template for a while now. I might look into it more now. JangFett(Talk) 21:18, August 31, 2010 (UTC)
We have to take into account the possibility that the series could go for as long as at least five seasons if not more. Our template will have to change to reflect that, and we might get to a point where we don't list the episodes at all, just the seasons, and you would link from there. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:58, September 4, 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps have the episode names, not the whole template, hidden as default? -- 1358(Talk) 08:06, September 4, 2010 (UTC)
To expand on Riff's idea, maybe the overall TCW template can just have the seasons, and each season could get its own separate template with the episodes. - Esjs(Talk) 20:26, September 7, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that was where I was going with the idea. Is there really the need to link back to the entire series through a template when the link is likely on the page in the text anyway? -- Riffsyphon1024 06:18, September 8, 2010 (UTC)
In response to the idea proposed right above me: I think that would just make things more cluttered and even harder to keep track of, as really, ending up with five or six templates at the end of the series just to be able to name each individual episode somewhere isn't—to me—very prudent or efficient. Yes, listing each episode in one template in some form or another takes up space, but I personally find that to be preferable than having to keep track of a multitude of different templates. I myself have found the template to be a little on the cluttered side as more episodes are getting added, so I'd support something like Master Jonathan's proposal. I've based my modifications off of his. Here are the changes I made:
The Season Two episodes (and presumably as the Season Three episodes will be, as more are confirmed) are condensed to one line to balance the space that is offset by the Season One comics. This change is purely aesthetic.
The HoloNet News podcasts are condensed like the episodes are. This change is open to debate, but since—as pointed out by Master Jonathan—hovering over the link will display the article name, this new arrangement really functions in the same way that the episode arrangement does.
The second version has all of the relevant video games and their Prima Guides added. Again, this change is open to debate, but as the video games are definitely related to the series, I thought I'd give them a chance.
I realize that there's an extremely fine line I'm crossing here, as if we include the video games, we may want to include the graphic novella series, the comic series, the novel series, etc., in the template. If it comes down to that, I would rather see the video games removed than have to include every aspect of the series and its related info, as that would just be too much to fit into one template. The criteria I'm trying to follow is if something is directly related to the television series, if that helps any, and the Visual Guides and the HoloNet News podcasts definitely meet that criteria—the rest, I'm not so sure. I personally see the video games as relevant because they use almost the exact same animation that the series does, but again, that's a subjective point. We may even consider creating a new template altogether for that supplement stuff.
The "Other material" titles are condensed; I took out the "The Clone Wars" title where possible, as that's really the assumed part of the title when it's mentioned as part of The Clone Wars series.
All of the modifications were made in the interest of space, as this template is only going to get bigger and more unsightly as the series continues. Feel free to discuss any of the changes that I made. Is this something (or like something) closer to what we want to modify the template to? CC7567(talk) 08:27, September 22, 2010 (UTC)
Why not just make the template hidable by default along with each individual section? That would seem fine to me, and it wouldn't be to much work. Master FredceriqueBegun the Clone Wars has † 11:22, September 22, 2010 (UTC)
While yes, that would work to a certain extent, I find that it would be only a temporary solution. The template will keep on getting bigger no matter what, so it's best if we actually do something to redesign it somehow. CC7567(talk) 06:21, September 23, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, not sure why I broke Season Two into two lines. I like your modifications, CC, and I support putting the video games in there based on the reasoning you gave. I think we just need to get some other opinions here, but I think your version will work perfectly. —Master Jonathan(Jedi Council Chambers) 03:48, September 23, 2010 (UTC)
The template has now been redesigned. Any input is welcome here. CC7567(talk) 09:52, September 25, 2010 (UTC)
Looks good. 1358(Talk) 10:08, September 25, 2010 (UTC)
