Wookieepedia > Senate Hall archive > SH Archive/Conjectural article solution

Ok, here I am, Justin Gann, my first time before the Senate, with a proposal.

First, I will outline the problem.

The Star Wars universe is big. (I refrain from quoting Douglas Adams here.) It has a vast potential for expansion. With movies, television, cartoons, and comics, the visual world often grows in areas the written word does not follow. As a result, we have many items of continuity that are seen, but as of YET have no canon name or model. Thanks to the RPG, the Essential Guides, and Insider, names are coined for these "cryto-continuity" items regularly; on the other hand, the constant addition of new media means this category seems to grow ever larger, rather than shrink.

It is my belief that as many aspects of continuity as possible should be covered by Wiki. If, in a novel, a character makes a one-line throw-away allusion to their "brother Harry," that character gets a Wiki article and everyone is ok with that. If a character appears in a visual presentation but doesn't get a name, some people object to a "conjecturally titled" article about that character. They have their reasons, which I assume they could present better than me.

The lines seem evenly divided on such issues. Wiki is, above all, about fun and fandom. We should all be able to enjoy it. Rather than see Wiki continually divided over this issue, I suggest we come up with a solution that will at least make us all content.

My proposal: rather than indiviudal pages/articles on conjecturally named items, we have a small number of articles, ie unnamed characters page, unnamed vehicles page, etc. each page broken into subcategories using equal signs. We'd have all the pics with little blurbs of what we do know, and the sourc. for example

page: unnamed vehicles

Thoughts? Suggestions? Alternate solutions?

Justin Gann (with consultation presented by my alterego, Senator Cilghal)

  • I think this is a good solution. Clearly, some conjecturally titled articles deserve full articles, but the articles that basically serve little other purpose to state that the subject of the article exists and to show a picture of it are probably better served by being combined into a single article like this. jSarek 10:40, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Many articles with conjectural names are simply too long to be included in lists (*cough* Jedi Exile *cough*), but I agree that stubs whose sole purpose is to show an image should be merged. - in particular, articles following the "(person)'s (thing)" pattern. - Sikon [Talk] 13:02, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Hmm, well the difference being, Jedi Exile is a canon term isnt it? and its almost universally used and recognized, as opposed to so and so's whatchit. :) glad to see a positive response or 2;) Unsigned comment by JustinGann (talk • contribs).
      • No, it's purely a fan term. - Sikon [Talk] 13:12, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
        • Really? IIRC, they call you "the Exile" in the game all the time.JustinGann 13:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
          • "The exile", without capitalization. And certainly they never say "Jedi Exile". - Sikon [Talk] 13:48, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I like the proposal. This way much more canon stuff could be added, only we are missing names so far. But we need to keep an eye on this to not let fanon slip in. Only tilte is fanon so it should be allowed and done. I give it a YES! - Ceiran Harmony Unsigned comment by 195.93.60.137 (talk • contribs).
    • I like Cilghal's idea too, but I suspect that we could add in the sub-categories to existing pages - for instance, the Senator for Taris's landspeeder would go under the Senator for Taris, rather than Airspeeders. This would add a richness of detail to the pages; for instance under Chak Fel, we should mention his use of a grey uniform with black and red trim on the cuffs and collar, a seperate dress uniform with campaign insignia, and a DH-17 blaster pistol... --McEwok 14:14, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
      • Makes sense. - Sikon [Talk] 15:07, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
        • This is perfect for things like Tatooine hand cart, but I think some stuff is noteworthy enough to warrant an article with or without an official name, or a plethora of available information - Jysella Terrik comes to mind. CooperTFN 17:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
          • Well, this is not conjecture, it's just a name coming from an author's note. There are other such articles, like Cale Berkona. - Sikon [Talk] 18:33, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
            • This seems like a good idea to me, as the categories won't be as clogged with tiny articles. We should still have an article for anything with a name, or long articles like Republic capital ship. -LtNOWIS 20:48, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
              • I agree with most everything so far. Sounds like we're coming to a workable solution ;)
  • I am very glad this was brought up. While I don't think articles like Senator's airspeeder and Zayne's swoop deserve their own pages, I think having images and indexing them adds richness to the wiki. So yes to everything that has been said. - Breathesgelatin 04:36, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I like Justin's proposal. One big page of unnamed spacecraft would be really, really useful. I understand the benefit of McEwok's idea, too, but I don't think it's that useful overall. Just because a certain character has been seen wearing a certain helmet, or a species has been shown using a particular speeder does not mean that there is any major connection between the artifacts and the individuals. — SavageBob 16:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Integrating these into a single page works for me, as long as they're not deleted entirely. -- Darth Culator 16:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Would we have a few general pages (i.e Unnamed Characters; Unnamed Starships; Unnamed Vehicles etc) or more specific pages (i.e. Unnamed Tatooine Characters; Unnamed Rebel Starships; Unnamed Coruscant Vehicles etc)? I think larger pages might get a little too long, considering the potential amount of unnamed things found throughout Star Wars - Kwenn 17:57, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
    • I suggest we first try to fill the larger ones, and if they become too big, it's never late to split them. - Sikon [Talk] 18:01, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
      • Fair enough - Kwenn 18:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[1] What do you think?JustinGann 18:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Looks good, though seems awfully information-dense. Might get messy if not organized well (not that your page isn't organized well, just that there's a lot to fit in) - Kwenn 18:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
  • It looks fine except for the fact that the images don't align properly with the text. If there's a way to force the images to align, it'd be perfect. — SavageBob 19:22, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Does anyone know how to "force the images to align"? I agree with SavageBob, but don't know how to fix it.JustinGann 22:01, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
      • Well, I've finished the anonymous vehicle page for now!JustinGann 00:30, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
