I was under the impression that excerpts were not allowed to be used due to plagiarism or whatever. But then on the page there is an excerpt in place. Im just wondering if they are allowed now or if they aren't, because if so I would like to do some, and if not, that one needs to be removed. Just wondering, and aspologies on the lack of a hotlink there, I couldnt seem to get it right lol. Trenton Vinh 01:38, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Isn't there a 'fair use' with excerpts as long as they are a certain length and for educational purposes? --Katana Geldar 05:26, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Destroy all excerpts. In fact, I think we should wipe publisher's summaries as well. - Sikon 07:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Man, we've had these discussions a lot. I agree with wiping the actual excerpts, and only linking to the official ones. Pub. summaries, like the community agreed before, should be kept. —Xwing328(Talk) 15:55, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Here's why we are allowed to use copyrighted material on this site:
"…the fair use of a copyrighted work…for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—
  1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
  2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
  3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
  4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work." (excerpt from the section 107 of US Copyright Law)
  • In response:
  1. We are a non-profit organization, seeking to educate Star Wars fans.
  2. It directly relates to the purpose of this site.
  3. Publisher's summaries and excrpts are short pieces of the work as a whole (hence the name excerpt) and do not cross the line as being "too substantial" a part of the work.
  4. The use of publisher's summaries and excerpts will, if anything, only increase interest in the media in question. We are not giving away the entire copyrighted story, just the part that the publishers' themselves release in order to attract interest in a product. —Xwing328(Talk) 16:03, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Lastly:
(Section 504(c)(2)) protects people operating under the reasonable assumption that they were operating under Fair Use. In order to qualify, we need to be sure that we have carefully considered the criteria listed above for fair use, which we have ever since this site was founded. —Xwing328(Talk) 16:05, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
    • On the organization thing: "we" are not an organization at all, non-profit or not. Wikia is a for-profit organization whose primary goal is to make money. Just a not-so-relevant clarification. - Sikon 17:13, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Well good thing "we" don't have to be an "organization," just non-profit. That was just bad wording on my part. And maybe we can just move away from Wikia, then be completely non-profit :P But I don't think that's going to happen. —Xwing328(Talk) 23:44, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
