Forums > Senate Hall archive > SH Archive/Image Management: Unused images

This is a subject I've been meaning to bring up here for some time: image management. We REALLY need to work on this. The two main things are Unused images and Uncategorized (untagged) images. For this thread: the unused. As you may know, I have speedy'd a TON of unused images over the last few months, but our section is still way out of control. Here’s a little sister-wiki comparison:

  • MuppetWiki (currently at 10,324 articles) has 1 unused image.
  • Memory Alpha (currently at 20,282 articles) has 18.
  • Wookieepedia (currently at 36,176 articles) has 1,421.

I have no problem with keeping a few extra images around for particular reasons, but this is ridiculous. We need to get this section down to a manageable level. I don't see why this category should stay any more populated than other maintenance categories. So, what needs to be done?

  • Use it or lose it, I say. We all need to go through these images and see if there is any use for them in any existing articles. If there's not, delete it.
  • Maybe there are images for subjects that don’t have articles. If so, added them to the Gallery of requested articles.
  • Any user images that you personally uploaded but are no longer using, please tag for speedy deletion. And in the future, if you remove a personal image from your userpage, speedy it right away.

Now, we could go through them all individually, but I’m thinking a radical new approach may be better: we tag them all CSD (or perhaps make a special new tag just for this) and generate a gallery. We keep them all for a week (as with IFD). People can put them in articles or do what they want with them. Whatever's left after a week’s time: delete.

How about it? -- Ozzel 22:14, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Ya, something needs to be done. Users are uploading images onto the server that just do not have a place here. IMHO, in many cases, it would be better to host images that are meant for user pages and temporary demonstrations onto imageshack, or a similar site, and simply link to it here rather than filling the Wikia server with pointless pics.–SentryTalk 23:04, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
    • Yer, i agree, a change of policy perhaps? Jedi Dude 23:07, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
  • I disagree. I uploaded many pics from Force Commander months ago. I still haven't used all of them, but once I complete my overhaul I will have. There may be other situations like this. Any deletion of images shouldn't simply involve "it's unused, delete it." There should be a more intensive process. As an additional point, space is not a concern on the Wookiee. This has been pretty well established, so I don't see a pressing need to run around deleting images. Havac 19:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
    • Then those pictures ought to be placed in stub articles until you can get back to them and flesh them out. Unless they're serving to illuminate a topic, then they're not being fairly used. jSarek 03:21, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Yes, at least make the effort to make a stub and give it a picture. Then come back later to fill in the details. -- Riffsyphon1024 04:03, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
        • That, or we can pull an Uncyclopedia and huff blast all unused images, but make a backup copy from which people can restore images if they so desire. - Sikon [Talk] 13:57, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
