Infoboxes should be implemented in the following manner:

  • Infobox should be placed at the beginning of the article, after {{Eras}} and {{youmay}}-type templates, but before {{quote}}
  • Unused section headers should be hidden
  • Lines should begin with with the pipe char. (I), not end with it (see second example below)
  • Infoboxes are typically unnecessary on small, stub-ish articles—remember, they supplement the article, not replace it

Hope this clarifies things somewhat. RMF 01:31, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I don't like removing the blank fields. If later research or a later source provides the information that was previously unknown, a general user has to be very familiar with the infobox template to know that there even are other options to add this information. In other words, by leaving the complete infobox there with the blank fields (which don't show up outside of edit mode anyway), it's easier to add the information later should it become available. — SavageBob 14:31, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
    • I agree. A lot of times, if I'm revising a page and come across info that goes in its infobox, I'll plug it in in the empty slot, but I won't if I don't know that there's a slot it should go in. jSarek 02:05, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
      • Leaving fields out is only valuable in situations where (a) the template is so big leaving in all those blank spaces is too much work, (b) the character/ship/what have you is obscure enough that no more information is ever going to be revealed, and (c) fields are added to the template after the infobox is added. It's only because of (c) that we should leave major fields out, like "region" for a planet, or "species" for a character. But which fields are major? I say leave it up to the editor who puts the infobox in. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:10, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Yeah, you're right—as you can see, I updated the above to modify this. Any other thoughts on additions/removals? RMF 14:04, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
