I would just like to discuss a possible CT regarding Live Action Images. Based on this discussion in Talk: Mara Jade Skywalker, "Live Action pics should remain preferred over the illustrations." However, I'm not sure that this has ever been addressed in a CT outside of movie characters, and I don't think that it is an official policy. There are only a handful of EU characters that have live action depictions, and it wouldn't be too much trouble to make sure that all such characters have live action infobox images. I am just wondering whether such a policy should be implemented to address complaints/edit wars such as this. Additionally, when the Databank still existed, they used these images, which seems to point towards these live action shots being preferred. While I believe it would be preferable to have a standard to point at, there are some small issues with standardizing "Live Action pics over illustrations".
The images are sometimes poor. These images are not of the highest quality, but perhaps better versions could be found.
The images don't show the character at the latest date they appeared. These images would seem to conflict with the canon appearance of the character, but it's also the price paid by other live action images.
I hate to make more work for everyone, but what about a case-by-case basis?
Having a quick look at that list, decent LA pics of mara, guri and dash are available (in regard to clarity, minimal noise and general consistency with other visual representations) whereas some of the others don't have anything decent at all (pellaeon isn't consistent with other representations and karrde's while i think is consistent isn't good quality) Manoof (talk) 02:04, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
What i mean is IF a decent LA pic exists, it MUST be used Manoof (talk) 02:06, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
That's basically what the rule is right now; use the best image, with preference (but not a mandate) for live-action images. I think that has been, and remains, the best solution. jSarek (talk) 02:29, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
That's exactly what I'm saying though. "Basically what the rule is" is all well and good, but I'm hoping to nail down an actual guideline to avoid the natural subjective image debates that can arise on talk pages. We already have a guideline which prefers headshots, why is a guideline that says exactly what Manoof says: If a "decent" LA pic exists, it should be used if it doesn't conflict with later portrayals. Or something to that effect. Protectorate (talk) 12:52, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
If you think such a policy is needed, I wouldn't object, though I haven't personally seen much in the way of talk-page image debates on this issue lately that would make a policy necessary (Avoid instruction creep, and all that jazz). As far as I can recall, the only time we've had an explicit site-wide discussion on this was in Forum:CT Archive/Species Main Images, where consensus rejected policy, though not the principle of live-action images being preferred. jSarek (talk) 19:12, November 19, 2013 (UTC)
