Forum:SH Archive/Looking ahead: The next barn-burner

Hey there everyone. It's now been over a month since the conclusion of our first barn-burner. I think I can safely say that it was a roaring success. The community came together and brainstormed ideas; helped each other out with information from sources; wrote a ton of articles; reviewed and critiqued each other's work; and designed some bitchin' templates. We produced seven Featured Articles (with one article still on the FAN page), twenty-six Good Articles, and eight Comprehensive Articles. The seven FAs will be showcased consecutively this month in a special front-page "Wookiee Week." I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who helped out in any way. It really was a community effort, and I think we all had a good time.
In my original proposal for the barn-burners, I suggested that we do one either tri-monthly or tetra-monthly. If we want to take the former route, then next month will be go-time. If we think that's too frequent, there's always September. August might be fun, as everybody is more active on the site in the summer. Anyway, I'm hoping that people will chime in here with ideas on when they'd like to proceed.
I'd also like to see some ideas floated for Barn Burner Numbah two. As I picked the last topic, I'll refrain from making any suggestions this time around. Everybody else, go nuts. Also, to promote the community spirit of these things, I'm hoping that someone else will volunteer to lead the next one. It's easy as pie (Sorry Kilson; you're probably hungry now). Any takers?
That's it from me. Float suggestions, suggest a month, and volunteer to lead it. Go! Menkooroo 06:51, July 4, 2011 (UTC)

- I'm still fond of the weapons barn-burner I suggested before. If I remember right, the only reason the first FA weapon was written was because people bet an imaginary sandwich over it. While I'm not sure we can beat that scenario, we could use that sentiment as our guiding light and write some kick-ass stuff. There are plenty of weapon articles lying around from books, video games, and various RPG suppliments, and they could sure do with some improvement. NaruHina Talk

- We need to continue to focus on astrography (i.e. planets, sectors, systems, trade routes, etc). The Atlas has helped us immensely with galactic history of many of these areas now. TK-999 has already demonstrated that even small articles on astrographical articles can result into CANs. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:53, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
- I like the weapons idea, as well as the astrographical items, but I have noticed there are very few droid FAs. Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 09:02, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
- Another idea mentioned in IRC was Coruscant And Everything Related to it. 1358 (Talk) 12:18, July 4, 2011 (UTC)

- I'm fine with all the above. I still suggest a cast and crew option. I understand most people don't like to do OOU articles, but I fell they may not mind as much if they had the practice. Also, it's an area that needs a lot of attention. Some other ideas are Jedi, Sith, buildings, cities, flora, fauna, etc. MasterFred

- I really like the weapons barn burner idea as well. Most Users have never written a weapon article, so it will be an experiment for everyone. I don't know who would lead the barn burner though. Kilson(Let's have a chat) 00:36, July 5, 2011 (UTC)
- I'd go for weapons. Boom boom! <-Omicron(Leave a message at the BEEP!) 00:49, July 5, 2011 (UTC)

- If we do go for weapons, I believe we should focus on something specific in that category. There are many different types of weapons. Blasters, lightsabers, chemical weapons, superweapons, you name it. If we include all of these into our project, I think it'll just be to broad and will kinda diminish the entire purpose of the barn-burner. I say we narrow it down a bit, like only blasters or only melee weapons. Just my two cents. QuiGonJinn

- Do personal weapons. That narrows it down considerably.—Tommy 9281 Wednesday, July 6, 2011, 20:45 UTC
- Yeah, that's a good narrowing of weapons.--Exiled Jedi

- Ooh I like Tommy's idea! Could result in a lot of new and interesting articles. Darth Trayus(Trayus Academy) 07:06, July 7, 2011 (UTC)
- Generally, I think that broader is better. Kilson makes a good point in that weapons articles aren't widely written, so even if we were allowing lightsabers, blasters, superlasers, etc, it would still be an exercise in doing something different for almost everyone involved. As the, uh, "inventor" of the barn-burner, I personally don't think that the broadness would diminish any sort of purpose. I fear that personal weapons is too narrow (especially after our recent cleansing of personal lightsaber articles), and I think that a topic like "weapons" is broad enough for a lot of people to get involved and be creative, but still narrow enough to link everything together under a common and uniting theme. Remember that wide community participation is a goal, rather than strict guidelines --- after all, we had people writing articles ranging from Tree-drum music to Hronk to Sunchoo's village to Knuckles of the katarn last time. The more options available to writers, the better. Menkooroo 07:35, July 7, 2011 (UTC)
- Not too narrow at all. There are other personal weapons besides lightsabers: Kyle Katarn's bryar pistol, Lumiya's datapad are two examples. Even Darth Scabrous' HK droid, the Yoke of Seeming, Tulkh's spear, the possibilities are as endless in this subject as much as others. I've done several personal weapons, and not all of them are lightsabers. Let's see just how creative my fellow Wookieepedians can be.—Tommy 9281 Thursday, July 7, 2011, 08:14 UTC
- Good point. However, it's still more limiting than the broader "Weapons," which itself would be a great theme that would offer most users a chance to write something different while still allowing them a good deal of freedom and creativity. I'd like to avoid limitations as much as we can, and have the topic broad enough to invite a wide range of users with a variety of interests, yet narrow enough to present a solid and non-vague theme. I'd like to see the host of the barn-burner answer questions such as "Can I do this?" "Does this count?" or "How about this?" with "Sure, why not!" rather than "Nope, two people used that weapon." And that would go for any of the topics --- eg, "Droids" rather than "Protocol droids," or "Astrography" rather than "Outer Rim moons." Just my two cents, though. Menkooroo 08:29, July 7, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with Menk. I feel there is just not enough notable "Personal weapons" around that a large portion of Wook Users can write. Plus, a broader "Weapons" barn burner will attract a lot of different of ideas. We could get everything from knives to super lasers. Personal weapons would likely just be a bunch of lightsabers and maybe a few blasters. Kilson(Let's have a chat) 04:40, July 12, 2011 (UTC)

- A couple of ideas in the running for the last one that I still like are a barnburner on senators or members of the New Jedi Order. Another idea is stormtroopers. --Eyrezer 07:03, July 9, 2011 (UTC)
- I could get behind any of these ideas. If we do weapons, we could define "personal weapons" as weapons that can be held by a person, rather than as weapons that belong to a specific named individual. But the broader "weapons in general" would be fine too. I could do something like tensor rifle or whatever. ~Savage

- I think going as broad as possible is best, so let's just stick with "Weapons". I've got one that I've been meaning to write up for a CAN or GAN someday, and this might prompt me to do it, but it wouldn't qualify as a "personal weapon" even under Bob's definition (for that matter, it may not qualify as a "weapon" at all, given that it's actually an IU hoax). - Although many seem enthused about weapons (personal or otherwise), can we get the formal vote poppin? August is in two weeks.—Tommy 9281 Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 23:30 UTC
- If where doing weapons why not raise it one and male it SUPER weapons? Darth Needham 03:50, July 14, 2011 (UTC)
- In lieu of a formal vote, we'll throw out the question: Everyone cool with weapons? Menkooroo 09:56, July 14, 2011 (UTC)
- Definitely weapons in general. Kilson(Let's have a chat) 17:59, July 14, 2011 (UTC)
- Weapons in general seems to be the way to go. –Tm_T (Talk) 09:49, July 15, 2011 (UTC)

- Do it! Menkooroo 09:52, July 5, 2011 (UTC)
- If no one else wants to volunteer, I might as well. I really enjoyed the last barn burner, and I want to see how a weapons barn burner would turn out. I also have a few ideas for this barn burner, including mandatory reviewing for writers. The only problem is the fact that I move into my college dorm on August 18th, so my activity for about a week afterwards will possibly be decreased. If anyone else wants to lead the barn burner, just say so and I'll move aside. Kilson(Let's have a chat) 17:59, July 14, 2011 (UTC)
- You and me both, Kilson. I relocate to my college apartment on August 20th. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:27, July 15, 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think the week of inactivity would be a problem. I strongly recommend not forcing things such as mandatory reviews on anyone, though. Encourage, sure, but I would hate to see any criteria for participation. People were pretty cool about reviewing last time. Menkooroo 07:35, July 15, 2011 (UTC)
- After thinking it over, I think I agree with you Menk about the reviewing, and about leading it. Kilson(Let's have a chat) 01:22, July 16, 2011 (UTC)
- Awesome. :) Feel free to create the appropriate SH thread at... I dunno, any point after July 20th? That oughtta be a good amount of prep time. Menkooroo 11:51, July 17, 2011 (UTC)
