Wookieepedia was recently granted the Monaco skin, which is pretty nice. However, the banner chosen for the new skin is perhaps not ideal. Thus, after some discussion in the IRC channel, we decided to have a contest to find a new banner.
Everyone can participate. The images that make up the banner are: <gallery> File:Monaco wikia header.jpg File:Monaco background strip.jpg File:Monaco accent1.jpg </gallery>
Rules for the contest:
- Provide sources for any images you use in your banner proposal.
- The images that make up your banner must match the current banner images in height and width.
- Keep Wookieepedia's current color scheme in mind when designing your banner proposal. We can change our color scheme, but would prefer not to.
- Don't pop hundreds of images into your banner proposal. This is not the TFN forums; we actually have a sense of aesthetics.
Please put your banner proposal below. Voting will not start right away. Also, the contest rules may be modified at any time. --Imperialles 15:57, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Proposals[]
Still working on the other two, but I thought this header would be fitting no matter what they other images turn out to be. - JMAS Hey, it's me! 23:45, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Battle of Yavin
Battle of Endor
This proposal uses a Jedi Temple theme, with a silver blade as the header, seamless repetitions as the background, and a seamless accent incorporating a resized/cropped image of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Hopefully the color matching will work and the seams will hold true no matter the browser resolution.--Goodwood (Alliance Intelligence) 03:41, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Another proposal uses a Rakatan Temple theme. Utilizing a screen capture from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the Temple has been cut away and superimposed upon a seamless background of sky and grass. The image of the Temple has been extracted, otherwise, all art is done by me.--Goodwood (Alliance Intelligence) 06:52, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Proposed below is the first of EU proposals. With the header being a simple quote from the general area of the subject. --Redemption(Talk) 20:16, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
This time I got a little creative with the brushes available and put out one for Darth Talon. --Redemption(Talk) 05:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
The red-suited Sith Lord, from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Commencement. --Redemption(Talk) 14:10, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Discussion[]
- Huh, good idea, JMAS. I kinda like the idea of the "long time ago" banner for the top. I'm interested to see what other pictures are presented here by both yourself and other users. Hopefully we can get several different "themes" created by various users for the site to vote on. Space-theme (ROTJ screenshots, maybe?) , battle-theme (like the current Monaco one), etc. I'm looking forward to seeing future proposals. Greyman(Talk) 02:19, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- I really dig the Long Time Ago banner. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:22, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sadly it's out of the question, because it will repeat across the page, which looks amateurish. --Imperialles 12:07, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- If the picture is created with enough black dead space on the far sides, then that's all that should repeat. I was playing around with the Monaco pictures on another wiki the other day, and (from what I could see) only the first 10% or so and the last 10% or so of the picture repeats—nothing in the center. I'm pretty sure we could make it work if we keep that in mind—that is, if that's what the community decides they'd like to see at the top. Greyman(Talk) 14:12, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, so I pulled a screenshot of the above description I gave. It can be found at File:Topbanner.jpg. Hope that helps :) Greyman(Talk) 14:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, at the higher resolutions that Imp and I use (1680x1050 for me), it does repeat, and more than once at that. Just food for thought--Goodwood (Alliance Intelligence) 14:33, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- Curse you and your higher resolutions :P I forgot about those, lol. I guess we need to find something along the lines of the current Monaco banner, then, so as to compensate all user's resolutions. It shouldn't be too hard to do ;) For what it's worth, it was a good idea while it lasted JMAS. Greyman(Talk) 15:02, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- The idea's not necessarily dead. You could just make the image even wider, about 1200 pixels or so. The way that the byte information in gif and png images are written, wider images with the same colours will be smaller file sizes than tall images. The only concern is for lower resolutions that the graphic might interfere with the username. Cool stuff though - I hadn't ever thought about tying the wikia_header and background_strip together into one piece.—Unsigned comment by BladeBronson (talk • contribs).
- Ah, sweet. Thanks, Blade. Greyman(Talk) 18:17, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
- I find it rather funny that in the instructions, it says the entries much match the dimensions of the example images. All of these suggestions that have been made do that. And now all of a sudden they don't work because of a few people that have extraordinarily high resolutions. Besides Imp and Goodwood, I know of one person who has their resolution at 1600x1200, and everyone else I know never sets theirs above 1280x1024. So what is the "standard" for which this is going to be set? Personally, I'm thinking 1280x1024 or 1280x960. If it fits on that resolution, it should be fine. Anyone who gets overlap setting their resolution higher just has to live with it. I think this needs to accommodate the needs of the majority that edit Wookieepedia, not the very few. - JMAS Hey, it's me! 20:00, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

- Make sure the 2nd and 3rd pictures "merge" together, like the current banner at the top, with no obvious lines where the two images meet. —Xwing328(Talk) 17:05, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- There's a thin white line between the two. So no matter what we do, there will be a division. --Redemption(Talk) 03:43, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Is it possible to open up the voting, or are we still waiting for more submissions? If the latter is the case, I can probably whip up another one...--Goodwood (Alliance Intelligence) 23:24, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose we could... I myself preferred the Battle of Yavin banner. ~Roger Roger~ Home of the B1s 11:38, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
