I created a new welcome template, {{Welcome2}}, which is a slightly updated of form of {{Welcome}}. With it, you no longer have to sign your name or enter a user's name; and the link to your talk page actually works. The following is a usage comparison between the two templates:

Before: Sample user, {{subst:welcome}} &mdash ~~~~

Now: {{subst:welcome2|Yourusername}}

Replace the "Yourusername" text with the user name of the poster, not the receiver. Remember, templates in the user talk namespace should always be substituted. RMF 21:48, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Might be a stupid question, but just to be sure, this won't change all the existing templates we've already used and thus put the user's name in front? -- Riffsyphon1024 22:13, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
    • No, that's why I created a separate one: I didn't want to affect all the instances {{Welcome}} is transcluded. If you would rather use the other, that's fine; it's just that this one is a little bit cleaner and easier to use. RMF 22:18, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
  • I see one small problem. It doesn't account for custom signatures. Could it be changed to use "yourusername" for the "my talk page" link but still use a ~~~~ for the sig? —Darth Culator (talk)
    • Okay, I modified it so that you will now enter:{{subst:welcome2|Yourusername|~~~~}}
      • That way, you still get your custom sig. RMF 22:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
        • Heh, on that note, I'll stick to what I'm good at. ;) -- Riffsyphon1024 22:29, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
        • Eeex-cellent. 35.gif That's much nicer than the old welcome doodad. Not that the old welcome doodad was bad, but this is niftier. (And I can't believe I forgot to sign a comment. I can't remember the last time I did that. 8.gif) —Darth Culator (talk) 22:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
          • Hmm, we could have a problem if you include an mdash in your sig. The way I have the template setup, it also includes an mdash, which could lead to double-dashes. I guess I could either modify the template (which would make it harder for us without a custom sig) or tell certain people they can't use it until they change their sig ;-) RMF 22:41, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
  • I substed and deleted {{welcome}}, and I suggest welcome2 to be moved because "welcome2" is an ugly name. - Sikon [Talk] 07:45, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Don't mean to be the party pooper, but typing "{{subst:welcome2|Yourusername|~~~~}}" is still the same amount of text as "Sample user, {{subst:welcome}} --~~~~". And now that the bot has changed the welcome message on every existing user's talk page from template to static, means it won't update on the talk pages when the template is updated. --Azizlight 08:47, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
    • You can shorten the template name, for example, to {{w}}. - Sikon [Talk] 10:33, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
      • Yes, and the new version actually links back to your talk page in the text, unlike the other version. And your other point, that text in existing user pages won't be updated, is one of the reasons for substing: the fact that we want to archive the message that the user really received, as opposed to some template that has been updated several times since his arrival. There are other technical reasons for substing, such as reducing server calls, that I can elaborate on if you want. RMF 01:10, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
        • Fair enough :-) I guess it makes the welcome message more personal too; making it appear that the "welcomer" typed out the whole message themselves. --Azizlight 05:19, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I created the {{W}} template, so now the message should look like this: {{subst:w|Yourusername|~~~~}}. Is that better? RMF 01:15, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

  • I modified the W template. Now you can use either {{subst:w|Username|~~~~}} or just {{subst:w|~~~~}}. Also, for the Force's sake, PLEASE SUBST THIS TEMPLATE! - Sikon [Talk] 12:26, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Hmm. Just for future reference, should I subst this template? (Are there perhaps some instructions somewhere which could help me understand whether I should subst this template? 18.gif) Darth Culator 14:37, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
      • Yes, you should subst this template. Doing so reduces server overhead and gives the impression you typed all the text yourself. - Sikon [Talk] 15:28, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
        • I think Darth was trying to be witty :-) RMF 00:33, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
