I have a concern to highlight concerning our relationship with other Star Wars websites. We should be nicer to them when they attempt to set up articles on their websites here. This would allow us to improve relations with other websites.

For months, we have deleted pages on fan websites written by members of those sites on the excuse that they are of no use to us. I feel that because of this, we are isolating ourselves further from the rest of the Star Wars community who will eventually want nothing to do with us at all.

I think that we should allow these people to create pages and links to their websites on Wookieepedia so that it will make us a better place. Well, I have done a good job for Wookieepedia, helping make it into the power house that it is. Currently, we are the best English language Star Wars encyclopedia on this planet and I think it is a duty to the fan community.

So, we should change our policy of not allowing pages on fan websites and should instead be friendlier. I now feel really bad for participating in the "votes for deletion" against a few of those websites. I also think we need to reform or else our standard will fall.

I feel bad about how we can be mean and cruel to newer users and people from other websites. I have seen this happen and I think it makes us look pretty bad. We should not just keep with "official" Star Wars information but also give some room for fan communities. Having a List of fan sites is far too little for a Star Wars encyclopedia like us.

  • Just make sure they stay in the "culture" section of "real life" categories and I'm fine with it. VT-16 09:54, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
    • I couldn't agree more. BUT, links to other websites would lead a newcomer to that website and forget about us. For example, a new user would go to Jabba the Hutt's article and they see a link to a fan site. If they go there, all we are are comlinks to a better source from them. This, in the long run, would attach Wookieepedia too much to other websites, that we won't be seperated from them, Well be attached to them. Let this happen, an article will be like a T.V. With A LOT of advertisments. --Jabbathehuttgartogg Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF 09:56, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Disagree. We're not here to provide advertising space for websites. Notable ones only. QuentinGeorge 10:20, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
    • Ditto. If we allow just any fan to write an article about their website, regardless of its size, popularity, or relevance, we will be turning this wiki into a fansite directory. We will open the flood gates to what amounts to thousands of totally irrelevant vanity pages which will probably only be visited by their creators. How are we supposed to sustain decent article quality under those conditions? IMHO, the purpose of this site is to document Star Wars lore and not to pander to fans from other websites.–SentryTalk 10:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
    • Not to sound like an elitist, but our job here is not to provide free advertising for these sites. If a site is notable enough, then they get their own article. If not, then it goes. StarNeptuneTalk to me! 13:44, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
      • Uh huh with all of that, if we start letting sites use us to get members then whose gonna stop anyone else, there be riots I tell you :P Jedi Dude 13:47, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Why not, give members of these sites who come to Wookieepedia conditions like contributing to our website while working on their pages. If we have problems with them, tell them that if they don't cooperate, we will delete their pages. This seems to be a form of browbeating them into submission. I won't be here for much of this weekend and I hope to come back to this forum nextweek. MyNz 19:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

  • The whole point is that this isn't a fansite heaven, and thats what it wil become, why should we need to browbeat them? Jedi Dude 20:07, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
    • "Having a List of fan sites is far too little for a Star Wars encyclopedia like us". In what way? What other encyclopedia has separate articles for non-official, non-canon, fan-made websites? In terms of canon, fansites are as notable as a drawing of Darth Vader by a 9-year-old. Such articles don't contribute to our compendium of canon - Kwenn 20:58, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

While I think this site should definitely include information on other websites, we needn't have articles on every site out there. I've already said some things about this on Forum:"Notable" fansites: perhaps you'd like to say what criteria you'd use to determine a website is worthy of an article? —Silly Dan (talk) 23:13, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

  • If sites want to become notable, they do it on their own, not on the coattails of Wookieepedia, as sad as that may seem. -- Riffsyphon1024 23:45, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Sorry MyNz, I kinda started a chain of objections. Bad choice asking me to state my oppinion. I think it's just about to rap. --Jabbathehuttgartogg Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF 01:11, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
  • lol dw Jabba its nothing to do with you, there just general opionions, perhaps a vote needs to be made just to make it slighty more official, maybe some terms what kind of sites get pages etc Jedi Dude 18:35, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
    • That's a relief. I thought I doomed this. A vote would be acceptible, I do agree. --Jabbathehuttgartogg Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF Jabba'sDesilijicClanTattoo-SWFF 19:01, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
  • I really don't see how we need to suck up to every two-bit fansite on the net by allowing them to create a bunch of advertising garbage so they "feel good" while compromising what Wookieepedia is about. Or maybe we should not ban vandals because we want them to feel good about Wookieepedia? Havac 22:43, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
    • Er, as we say on Wookieepedia:Vandalism, don't conflate good-faith attempts to help Wookieepedia with vandalism....22:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
      • another discussion spun out of control? Jedi Dude 18:39, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
