Relationship sections are pretty trivial, often contain OR, are unencyclopedic, and, in nearly all cases, the information in them fits better in the Biography and P&T. As far as I can tell (and I did a quick survey in IRC a few minutes ago) Relationships sections are frowned upon by most writers and people involved in the FA process, though because a handful of people object to FANs on the grounds that there's no relationships section, many FAs have them. Anyway, I would like to amend the MoS or whatever with something to this effect:

If a character has only appeared in one relationship, or several short relationships, then a Relationships section is not necessary. Information pertinent to a relationship should go in the Biography and Personality and traits sections.

(Feel free to reword sloppy wording for clarity, if necessary) Obviously, articles like Han Solo, since they've got multiple relationships which we know a lot about, should have these sections, and I've no qualms about that. Rather than starting a CT, I thought a general discussion could take place initially, so that anyone might argue the benefits of these sections. -- AdmirableAckbar (Talk) 19:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

  • I agree with more or less all of that. Unit 8311 19:56, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
    • Per Unit 8311. jSarek 21:11, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
      • Agreed, but what we have already on Han's and Luke's and the like shouldn't be moved or destroyed. In fact, it's actually quite helpful to know just how much nookie they get. ;) -- Riffsyphon1024 22:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
        • All of these sections should die a slow, painful death. They're not encyclopedic in the slightest (frankly, they're tabloidy) and any information contained in them should be in either the biography or personality and traits. Green Tentacle (Talk) 22:13, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

            • I agree with Riffsyphon1024. Long live the nookie! --Sgt. Smokey 21:57, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
              • Now I wasn't that serious about the nookie part. I agree that there should be a level of professionalism, but for those stated, having multiple girlfriends over a long span, especially for the "scoundrels", is just part of their history. -- Riffsyphon1024 03:46, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I can only see the relevant inclusion of such sections under circumstances such as those of Han, Luke, Lando, or anyone else who chases skirt for a protracted period of time in canon, and then only as a subheading of "Personality and traits," which is the most appropriate location of the more emotional and psychological aspects of the relationships. As for the plots of the flings themselves, the biography is more than sufficient. As many others say, these are giant OR and POV magnets, and should be omitted from the wiki to sustain professionalism. Graestan(Talk) 02:06, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
    • They certainly shouldn't be required on the article of anyone who ever had a relationship, but they can serve a useful function, especially for people with lots of relationships, or complicated relationships, or relationships that just can't be conveyed extremely well in the biography without digressing. They're as encyclopedic as, if not more encyclopedic than, a "personality" section. And if they have OR, then they're not being written right, and the OR is the problem, not the section. I've written or am in the process of writing some twenty-five FAs, and I've used relationships sections on a grand total of two. So while I clearly don't think they're vital, they can, in certain cases, be very useful. So while I support Acky's proposal, I'm wary of some of the subsequent comments saying "NEVER!" • I generally tend to agree with Ackbar in that there's no need to place a Relationship section in every character article, but I generally use them for characters with multiple relationships and some of them-e.g. Jaina Solo, I think are well-merited. The larger characters, such as Luke or Han, would IMHO be better off with a distinct section for relationships. It's an organizational technique-not an OR magnet or fanon magnet if done properly. All it's doing is taking a relevant snippet of information that would have been in the P&T and/or bio anyway and placing ==Relationships== before it. And while I know someone will pull out the "We're not Wikipedia" rule, they have something analogous for celebrities such as Harrison Ford or Natalie Portman. • You shouldn't have relationship sections for every charactor, only the big ones with major important ones! Mecenarylord 19:51, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
      • Per Havac and Ataru. Only on those articles that need it. -- Riffsyphon1024 23:00, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
