Forums > Senate Hall archive > SH Archive/Standardise header templates

This forum is to discuss the standardisation of header templates, be they for the article itself, or for the talk pages. Also, a series of new templates will be proposed.

ProposalEdit

StandardisationEdit

To standardise all templates to feature a relevant picture, a quote from the movies, or a paraphrase, with the description below. Exsisting expamples of the proposed guide are below. {{IDRIVE}} {{Majorspoiler}} {{NPOV}} {{Cleanup}}

OpposeEdit

  1. Sorry, I just don't think that it is necessary.–SentryTalk 00:39, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
  2. Weak Oppose to complete standardization. I think most of our header templates *should* undergo this standardization, but this does make them a lot more garish, which simply isn't appropriate for some of our templates which we would prefer to keep low-key. jSarek 09:57, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

CommentsEdit

  • It just makes the whole thing neater, and more aesthetically pleasing. .... 06:42, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
    • I agree with JSarek. In some cases, the header templates are already larger than they really need to be. Many of them should really be condensed down to a simpler and less distracting form, like we did for {{more sources}}.–SentryTalk 22:56, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
      • I would say that we need large templates to catch users attention - because most of them are asking for something to be done .... 23:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
        • Yes, but this is an encyclopedia and our primary purpose is to present information in a readable form. Some of our articles currently look more like a construction yard than anything else. When a header template is more distracting to the reader than the problem that it is meant to address, we have a problem.–SentryTalk 23:29, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
          • Exactly. Yes, some of our templates are asking for something to be done, but not all. A featured article, barring a way to vote them out being decided on, will always be a featured article. Until more info comes out, many of our stubs are likely to stay stubs. A self-contradictory article may be that way because the source material is contradictory, and there won't be a way to fix it unless and until some source retcons the problem. Furthermore, some problems would be *nice* to correct, but it may be a while before it happens ({{more sources}} and {{redlinks}} being good examples). jSarek 00:37, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
            • Well, the ones I was talking about in particular are the ones I posted below. .... 03:31, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
              • Well, that's not what how the proposal is worded . . . "To standardise all templates to feature a relevant picture, a quote from the movies, or a paraphrase, with the description below." jSarek 03:35, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
                • Oh, well, I mis-worded it. All "Header" templates, really. .... 03:36, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

  • I originally posted a preliminary version of this one in Template talk:Doppelganger, where Sentry cleaned it up and made it spiffier. It may look better with a screenshot of the scene from Ep. I where it takes place, though. jSarek 09:57, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to play around with the size of the images of these templates in the effort of improving them, but if you have a new design, or better quote, could you please submit it as a new template at the bottom of the above list. Thanks, .... 06:49, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

  • We really need to make some new images specifically for these templates, so that they are all the same dimensions. Eg. Make new 4:3 ratio images and resize to 125px (or whatever) wide in all templates. --Azizlight 06:54, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I always think they look nicer with borders. --—beeurd talk 01:18, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Feel free to alter them, by all means. .... 03:18, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm kinda confused here. I have already standardized most of the header templates. Currently, header templates that include an in-universe image have a 2 pixel border and a color scheme that is meant to match the picture. Other templates have a 1 pixel border and their coloring is not standardized (though it probably should be). All header templates have a width of 85% and include three possible font sizes: heading (<big>), body text, and small print (<small>).
What changes are you proposing? If you want to make every single header template look like your examples, then I disagree on the grounds that it is not always possible to find a relevant in-universe image and quote.–SentryTalk 06:17, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm talking about the templates I've got up there (how are the quotes not suitable?), and proposing a new Talk Header. .... 07:37, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
  • If we want to standardize, we should get a fixed image size. On a side note, I'm pleased to see how far this method of templates has come since the introduction of Template:Doom. --SparqMan 16:01, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
