File:Galaxies Jinda.jpg

I found this image on an internet bulletin board. I plan to crop out the data and add the image to the Jinda (tribe) article, but first I wanted to ask about the other information. I've never played Star Wars: Galaxies before, so I don't know what to make of the data. Is this character's name "Asesq Vito"? Do all random character in Galaxies have names? Should there be an Asesq Vito article?

And isn't it dumb that I had to create an entire page just to ask my quesion when a general question-and-answer forum would have sufficed quite nicely? :) — SavageBob 21:58, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Don't you name your own characters on that game? I believe this name to be complete fanon. I do not konw whether or not this is fanon, but I think it is non-canon.

    • We've included computer-controlled NPCs before: I assume these characters are as canonical as, say, Suvam Tan. —Silly Dan (talk) 01:52, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
  • This particular character is a non-player character (NPC). There is quite a mix of both named and unnamed NPCs in Star Wars Galaxies. There is no reason to assume that it is non-canon. And if I may quote Leland Chee:
"As far as the Holocron is concerned, I don't ignore anything. Licensing checks continuity in Galaxies like we would for any other game, book, or toy. As I do my continuity checks, the information gets entered into the database. I also incorporate anything from the Galaxies website and strategy guides."

    • Thanks, Azizlight. Are non-player characters given specific names that don't change from one player's game to another's, or is there some sort of random name generation going on? — SavageBob 12:04, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

All cities and points of interest in SWGalaxies are populated by randomly generated NPCs, that are automatically created and spawned when a player enters the vicinity of that place. I don't remember when they changed it, but for years all randomly generated NPCs (and there are hundreds or thousands on each server at the same time) used to have totally random names - like "Haurop Oopea (an artisan)" or "O-re Starrunner (a noble)". You could identify them by those job descriptions in brackets after their name, like "(an artisan)", "(a businessman)", or in this case "(a skilled Jinda worker)".

Those NPCs weren't individually generated and named by the game designers. Their names were randomly created by the game engine each time a standard NPC was spawned. Only certain NPCs (mostly NPCs that are used in quests) were given individual, unique names by the game designers. Some time ago, they changed that naming system - now most NPCs are only called "A noble", "A businessman" or such. So, I think random NPCs shouldn't get their own Wookieepedia articles or Wookieepedia will end up with thousands and thousands of super-short articles (you can only imagine how many random NPCs were created in the last three years) like "XYZ was a businessman on Tatooine." --Craven 12:18, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Yeah, the NPCs that are always in the same place have fixed names, while the NPCs that spawn randomly probably have random names. The above example, Asesq Vito, is probably a randomly spawned character. --Azizlight 12:32, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Okay, thanks to both of you. I agree that random characters don't need articles, and I'll leave the writing of articles on quest characters to those who actually play the game! — SavageBob 13:43, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
