Having just purchased the new Star Wars RPG book from Wixards of the Coast, and only recently discovering Wookiepedia itself, I can't help but notice that much of the character info in the book (Captain Typho's entry for example) seems to be lifted almost straight from their Wookiepedia entries. Is this because of the standardized source for canon info, or is there skullduggery afoot?

  • Hmm, I did notice some "borrowing" of imagery for the "Message to Spacers" article last year... There's also an uncanny feeling I've had while reading SOTG07, like some of the new info seemed awfully familiar in phrasing. VT-16 06:40, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

      • They also say that copying text word for word is copyright violation. And it's Wookieepedia. Jasca Ducato Sith Council 19:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
        • This kind of reminds me of this incident. Gray Jedi 20:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
          • Can you provide some examples of the similar passages? --Eyrezer 03:34, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

The formating is similar to the incident cited by Gray Jedi. I'm honestly not certain what the copywright laws are concerning things like Wookieepedia. It is an open content free info site, but it concerns a great deal of copywritten info (even if it gets changed enough to no longer threaten infringement) but its being cloned and coming out of a book ostensibly being written for profit. I expect its not active, malicious theft as much as it is a combination lazy writers and the fact that Wookieepedia is THE authority for Star Wars miscellania.

Examples Wookieepedia Typho remained in Amidala's service to defend the Senator against assassination attempts both on Naboo and Coruscant. Following the end of the Clone Wars, a distraught Amidala decided to travel to Mustafar unaccompanied to interrogate her husband with regards to the rise of the Galactic Empire and his supposed massacre of Knights and Younglings in the Jedi Temple. Typho attempted to go with her, but Padmé insisted on traveling with only her protocol droid C-3PO to protect her. The next time Typho saw her was at her funeral.

Threats Captain Typho continued to serve under Amidala throughout the Clone Wars, defending her against assasination attempts on Coruscant and Naboo. Following the end of the war, a troubled Padme prepared to depart to Mustafar to confront her husband about the death of the younglings at the Jedi Temple. Typho tried to go with her, but she insisted on travelling with only C-3PO. The next time Typho saw her was at her funeral.

Pretty blatant rip-off, but its not like Wookieepedia owns the general Star Wars info in the first place. Its also possible that one or both of the writers are the Wookieepedians who edited Typho's entry. Maybe someone from admin should talk to people at LucasArts or Wizards of the Coast.HamishMcGreigh 00:16, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

  • I have to agree with Trak Nar. Didn't have a problem with it last time it happened (see Gray Jedi's link above). Don't have a problem with it now. It's just flattering, I guess. KEJ 17:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Technically, it is illegal. We (the authors of Wookieepedia) own the copyright to any original writing on the site. Others are allowed to use this content—word for word or slightly modified (like above)—if and only if they give us credit for the original writing. Of course, if the article itself is plagiarism in any form of the original Star Wars source material, then we have no grounds to complain. Further, it is probably not worth pursuing this matter with Lucasfilm and its subsidiaries, since we ride a fine legal line as it is with much of our material. And in a sense, it is flattery. We're good enough for the official writers to use us as a source (although in this case we're doing much of their work for them), and we should strive to stay good enough for them. —Xwing328(Talk) 22:09, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
